“People got fainting fits if they saw bright, pure color,” Alexander Girard once said of the muted and monotone fabrics that were standard in the industry at the time. After he became founding director of Herman Miller’s newly formed textile division in 1952, he would go on to disrupt the status quo with his signature kaleidoscope of color. In just two decades, he created more than 300 unique designs for Herman Miller: vibrant, geometric, playful, and wholly original.

We’re introducing three new blankets to our collection from patterns pulled from the archives, including olive/pink checker, brown check, and multi-stripe.

In the mid-1960s, Alexander Girard designed a richly hued plaid throw blanket which Herman Miller later produced with Pendleton, a family-owned sixth-generation textile mill. Now, we’ve added three new patterns to the collection. Alongside Girard Studio, we dug through our archives for designs that would translate well and landed on olive/pink checker, brown check, and multi-stripe. The result is a colorful collection of patterns that delight and indulge the senses—anything but a blanket statement.

Alexander & Susan Girard • affectionately known as Sandro + Susie • Combined it became ‘Sansusi’ both a play on words in French {sans souci means carefree} and a moniker for their love and dedication to one another • ‘Sansusi’ is the name of a textile and many other works featuring the letter ‘s’ back to back which creates 2 hearts and the infinity symbol #alexandergirard by @girardstudio

We are honored to have this new publication as a beautiful and important addition to the ever expanding library of books on the life and work of #alexandergirard

‘Alexander Girard’s Imagined Worlds’ examines a modern design luminary whose collection of global folk art and vernacular forms informed his expansive design practice. The book centers the Museum of International Folk Art, its displays and archival collections, and Girard’s Santa Fe years as a locus for the designer-collector’s wide-ranging practices.

We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the many artists represented in this book and the team that made this project possible. @lmaddisonnm @monica_obniski @thenormalstudio @_kate_joyce @hirmer.publishers @museumofinternationalfolkart by @girardstudio
