This was my first time doing this hike. The views were incredible. I've driven down to this lake for years but never hiked the loop. I did the upper loop rather than the lower lake loop. Repost From @zestfullyzara ------------------------------------------------------------------------Maple Pass was the one (& only) hike that we got to do in the North Cascades before the smoke and fires pushed us out but DAMN it’s just the most beautiful Alpine wilderness area with so many gorgeous lakes that I’ve ever seen in the US 💙 North Cascades are sometimes nicknamed as the “American Alps” from the glaciers and soaring rugged mountain ridges. Despite the fact that most of these peaks don’t exceed 9,000 ft, the valleys are near sea level giving a grandeur view compared to even Colorado 14ers! Yes I said it, and I stand by it. #sorrynotsorry More than three hundred glaciers, many of them small, remain active at the heads of valleys and make up the greatest concentration of glaciers in a national park (outside of Alaska, of course)…though this is quickly changing as we see average temps rise, more wild fires, and less snow pack. This spot is cool because the hexagon columns stand so tall. Crazy to think that the volcano formed these. I highly recommend getting there before the trust opens and hike down…. We hiked a total of about 11mi carrying 30lb-ish packs up and down boulders🪨, steep inclines, and through serene wheat fields🌾.
