Easy to write over a river. Harder at 11pm on a Tuesday. The risk I’m taking isn’t dramatic. I didn’t quit anything. I have a full-time job, and when it ends I start the second one: building furniture for cyclists metal, wood, felt. A place for the thing you love, which right now lives in a corner of your flat. Worst case, I learn, and I end up with a bench full of prototypes that didn’t hold. Best case, eighty people own the first one. I built a brand once, nine years ago, and kept it quiet the whole time. This time everything is here: every decision, every mistake, before anyone owns one. That’s what this profile is. Every single thing you own has a place. Except your cycling equipment. Your clothes have a wardrobe. Your books have a shelf. Your keys have a hook by the door. But your helmet, your shoes, your gloves and your bottles? They end up on a chair, on the floor, or somewhere around your apartment. The things you use on every ride are the only things at home that nobody ever designed a place for. I’m an industrial designer, and that’s what I’m building: furniture for cyclists. L’única data cap a la qual apuntava tot el meu pla. I me’n vaig oblidar d’inscriure’m. La Traka és la cursa de gravel de Girona, la setmana que vénen ciclistes d’arreu a la meva ciutat. Hi anava a córrer i a aprofitar-ho per posar Girvolta davant de la gent exacta per a qui existeix aquesta marca. Les places es van esgotar. Això és cosa meva. Podria haver callat. Ningú ho hauria sabut mai. Però vaig dir que us ho ensenyaria tot, i un projecte no són només les parts que surten bé. Ara necessito una altra manera d’arribar als ciclistes, i prefereixo preguntar-t’ho abans que endevinar-ho. Si fossis jo, on t’hi presentaries? If you’re new here, this is what you just walked into. I’m Joan. Industrial designer from Girona. I spent years drawing cars in Italy with other people’s names on the work. Now I’m building my own: furniture for cyclists. Metal, wood and felt. Not somewhere to hide your bike. A piece you’d want in your living room, that happens to hold everything you ride with. It doesn’t exist yet. That’s the whole point of this account. The one date my whole plan pointed at. And I forgot to sign up. The Traka is Girona’s gravel race, the week riders from everywhere come to my city. I was going to ride it and use it to put Girvolta in front of exactly the people this brand is for. The places sold out. That’s on me. I could have kept this quiet. Nobody would ever have known. But I said I’d show you everything, and a project isn’t only the parts that go well. So now I need another way to get this in front of cyclists, and I’d rather ask you than guess. I wrote to six suppliers. Two replied. Today I walked into one of them. In July the first prototypes arrived and every single one was wrong. Wrong dimensions, warped edges, holes that didn’t line up. Months of drawings, and not one usable piece. So I went back to the start and began looking for someone who could actually make this. This is what that looks like: a bag of metal tubes, a factory floor, and someone who knows how to bend them properly. Nothing is signed and nothing is finished. But after three months of going backwards, walking out of there with these in my hands felt like the first step forward. This is the part most brands never show you. I said I’d show you all of it. Tornes a casa feliç. I en deu segons ho has escampat tot. La bici al passadís. El casc sobre una cadira. Les sabates a l’entrada. Els guants en un calaix qualsevol. Tot el que t’ha acompanyat durant la sortida, repartit pels racons que no ha triat ningú. No parlo d’endreçar. Parlo que ens gastem milers d’euros en tot això, ho cuidem com si fos part nostra, i a casa ho amaguem com si ens fes vergonya. A mi em passava cada diumenge. I un dia vaig pensar que no tenia cap sentit. Estic dissenyant una família de mobles per a ciclistes. El primer és per a l’equipació. Metall, fusta i feltre. Una peça de disseny vinculada al ciclisme. Una peça que qualsevol que entri a casa teva la trobi bonica. I que un ciclista entengui a l’instant. No per guardar-ho tot. Perquè la propera sortida comenci en un lloc que t’agrada. I acabi al mateix lloc. Que casa teva respiri ciclisme. On tens el casc ara mateix? Girvolta has no logo, no colours, nothing. This week I’m sitting down with designers and studios to find who gives it a face. I’m filming all of it, including the parts that go wrong. Four hours on the bike. Then you get home and the helmet goes on a chair. The shoes by the door. The bike leaning against the same bit of wall it’s been leaning against for years. Nobody decides that. It just happens. You choose the bike carefully. You choose the kit carefully. You care how all of it looks. And then it all ends up in a pile by the entrance, like it belongs to a different person. Here’s the thing. Plenty of people have solved this as hardware. Something you screw to a wall and try not to look at. Nobody has solved it as furniture. As an object you’d keep even if you stopped riding. I’m an engineer, and that’s what I’m designing.
