Finished The Queen's Resistance and the softness of Rising has officially given way to something heavier.

Brienna survived the revolution, but this book makes clear that winning a throne and holding one are two different wars. She's a mistress of knowledge finally welcomed into her father's House, except welcome isn't the same as belonging, and she spends this book earning the MacQuinn name all over again while serving a queen whose crown is still far from safe.

What struck me most was how little room the book gives Brienna and Cartier for softness. There's a trial, alliances to forge, a coronation to protect, and old regime loyalists circling for any crack in the rebellion. Love keeps getting pushed to the margins because the margins are the only place it's safe to exist.

Ross writes this the way she wrote the first book, lyrical, patient, never rushing the ache, but the stakes here are sharper. Running a country after a revolution is its own kind of brutal.

A satisfying, steady second act. Resistance, it turns out, doesn't end when the crown changes hands.

Turns out overthrowing a tyrant is the easy part. Now everyone has to deal with the consequences, rebuild their lives, and somehow make justice happen without becoming the very thing they fought against. Casual post-revolutionary activities. 👑🗡️

The old regime may have fallen, but power doesn't surrender quietly. This card represents tyranny, the abuse of authority, and the struggle to build something better after oppressive rule. It fits a story about restoring a queen, pursuing justice, and discovering that winning a revolution is only the beginning.

Some fictional women really do make you question your entire moral character.

I love a protagonist who has every reason to become bitter and cruel but still tries to do right by others. There’s something compelling about a heroine whose strength isn’t just what she can fight against, but what she refuses to become.

Meanwhile, I’m out here holding grudges over minor inconveniences.

Brienna, I’m sorry. I could never be you.

Finished Five Broken Blades and I'm still untangling who actually lied to whom.

Five of the most dangerous liars in Yusan get summoned to kill an immortal king. Simple enough on paper. But Corland builds a cast where everyone is hiding something, from the hitman chasing atonement to the assassin chasing freedom, and the real tension isn't the assassination. It's whether any of them can trust the people they're bleeding alongside.

What I loved most was how the book never lets vengeance feel clean. Each blade carries their own private wound into this mission, and Corland makes space for all of it without slowing the plot down. It's fast, political, and sly in a way that rewards paying close attention to every POV shift.

Then the ending pulls the rug out completely. The whole plot was never what it seemed, and I'm still recalibrating who I was actually rooting for.

A delicious, twisty start to a trilogy. I'm already bracing myself for Four Ruined Realms.

A deadly alliance, questionable loyalties, and people who are absolutely not telling the whole truth.

The trust issues are justified, the schemes are scheming, and nobody in this book needs to be making eye contact with anyone. Naturally, I was seated for all of it. 🗡️🖤

Five Broken Blades is Seven of Swords energy: everyone has an agenda, deception is a survival skill, and trusting the wrong person could ruin everything.

not every love story is a love story worth having.

sometimes it’s obsession dressed as devotion. sometimes it’s wanting someone so badly you start abandoning yourself. sometimes the chemistry is there, the feelings are real, and somehow, it’s still all wrong.

the lovers reversed is for the books that make you question whether love is enough, whether longing is worth the damage, and whether choosing someone else means losing yourself.

Finished Babylonia and Semiramis has fully taken up residence in my head.

An orphan raised by a shepherd becomes the only woman to ever rule the Assyrian empire. That's the legend Casati is working with, but what got me was how deliberately Semiramis builds herself. Every skill she picks up, war, diplomacy, reading people, is a brick laid against a world that already decided what she was allowed to be. Her successes get minimized from childhood. She just keeps building anyway.

The triangle at the center, her, Onnes, Ninus, isn't romance as decoration. It's the mechanism of her rise, and later, the cost of it. Love and ambition tangle until you can't easily separate what she wanted from what she needed in order to survive.

By the end, the throne doesn't feel like a triumph so much as a reckoning. Power, in this book, is never free. Someone always pays for it, sometimes the person who climbed to get there.

Lush, brutal, and unflinching about what it costs a woman to refuse the ending history already wrote for her.

I came in expecting ambition, bloodshed, and a woman determined to conquer the world. What I got was a Semiramis who seemed to choose her heart more often than her hunger for power.

I still find the polyamorous dynamic fascinating, especially how it sidesteps the usual narrative of men fighting over one woman. But I wanted more from Semiramis herself. Her ambition felt like a series of moments rather than something that truly defined her.

A compelling myth, but I wanted to feel the legend being born.
