The curated group show "Alterations" @beam_arts_gr is the final outcome of our art residency in Thessaloniki.

"Giulia Leonelli having dual origins from Italy and France while being based in Paris, she is a printmaking artist and an academic of art. She teaches printmaking at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where she also carried out her doctoral thesis entitled 'Entendre le pictural' which deals with the temporal understanding of a workof art by experiencing its development as space and time, the effects of rhythm and sensation as philosophical characteristics of art. Her work is very strongly characterized by flow and musicality, whichis translated into delicate etching on the material of each matrix she uses. Very often she is inspired by the place in which she works and aims to express it without imitating it or attributing it metaphorically. Thus, in her current work, the starting point was the place, the waterfront at the pier of the port of Thessaloniki. The ripples of the sea were studied as a quality and formed the beginning of her work. The series of works she presents are monotypes of a plexiglass matrix, with this aquatic feeling and its various transformations, usingcolor and the technique of chin colle.She creates multiple versions and levels, exploring the possibilities of her materials ina potentially endless game of variations."

P R É S E N T A T I O N

Ma pratique de la taille-douce est animée d’une tension vers les qualités irrésolues et fluctuantes des formes, vers l’écoulement de la matière.
L’élan dynamique qui parcourt ma démarche, dans ses connivences avec une vitalité typiquement baroque, s’exauce en une quête de rythme et de variation. Le Temps y est à l’œuvre - matériellement - par la répétition et le mouvement de formes gravées qui dérivent d’une même amorce rythmique.

L’éclosion d’une configuration formelle est souvent le fruit d’une surimpression de plusieurs matrices. Les choix opérés au moment de l’encrage accompagnent l’intention artistique vers l’avènement d’une forme : de ce fait, l’impression constitue une étape incontournable de la création.

La mémoire sensorielle d’un paysage, d’un environnement, affleure au détour d’un agglomérat de lignes, du frémissement d’une trame d’aquatinte. La matière gravée poursuit l’épreuve sensible sans viser la ressemblance. Elle imprime au visible quelque chose qui rejoint, plutôt, la courbe d’un son.

En apparence, elle se tait.

Son englouti
sous les vestiges du jour
allant,
pressé,
retenu en contingences.

L’astre culmine
sur des hordes de pas en foulées
mêlant leurs ombres
au détour d’un regard
manqué,

à l’horizon qui passe

juste à côté

le flot suit
poursuit
insiste,
n’en finit de rouler
à la surface brûlante
du bitume.

À côté d’elle qui est là
aujourd’hui depuis toujours.
Alors que le bruit submerge,
les regards se font rares
et tardent à rejoindre
le large
de ses contours défaits.

Ambiance d'arrière plan,
d’arrière vie en marge
du tumulte.
On croirait presque l’oublier,
la voir disparaître
en sourdine.

Si ce n'était
pour l’immense
dont elle est gardienne.

Le vaste
se respire d’un souffle,
l’air repris dans un murmure.
De vagues
mêlées
enserrent les corps
à distance,
fraîcheur tendue
outre la peau.

Preuve de l’immémorable
d’où naît aujourd’hui,
d’où ici dérive.
Au loin.
d’autres contours à peine soupçonnés
éclairent l’absence.

L’attrait est sans image.
Tiédeur humide,
mouvement et cadence.
Le sol soustrait
à la terre
qu’ici s'abîme
en permanence.

À l’écart du vertige.

Azur et argent.
Tissu inextricable
stratifié
qui ne cesse d’amorcer
des départs
que le ressac déjoue
retient
ramène.

Surgissement
en retour.

Exposée à l’infini

à elle seule

la vie

Giulia Leonelli (b.1985) @giulialeonelli.85 is a French/Italian artist who holds a doctorate degree in Visual Arts from University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where she teaches as a printmaking instructor. After a BFA in Fine Arts at Rome University of Fine Arts, she enrolled at Sorbonne University in Paris. In 2012, she was chosen as a recipient for the French/American “Young Talents” award, for which she attended the MFA Studio Art Program at New York University.

Her doctoral thesis Entendre le pictural discusses the temporal understanding of an artwork by experiencing its unfolding as space and time, and the implications of rhythm and sensation as philosophical attributes of art.

Her work is oriented toward a pictorial approach of printmaking, led by a musical aspiration and a poetic intent. Giulia Leonelli’s process is driven by a tension towards the unresolved and fluctuating qualities of forms, suggesting a sense of flowing that figures both the material elements and effects as well as a reference to the passing of time.

Writing also plays a crucial role in the artist’s creative process. The composition of poetic texts follows a parallel path to the creation of engraved images; both are driven by the same quest for poetic abstraction.

The memory of a landscape, of an environment, comes to surface within an agglomeration of lines, or of an aquatint texture. The engraved shapes pursue the physical expression of a place without aiming for resemblance or for a figurative rendering. The pattern gives back to the paper something that could rather rejoin the curve of a sound.
