Crafting by-plastic [@marco.ciacci, 2025] is a research book and paper exploring pre-plastic material traditions, narrated through the hole of a shirt button.

“During the winter of 2024, I undertook extensive research into materials and production techniques, with a particular focus on pre-plastic traditions in the search for more sustainable alternatives. [...] To explore this theme, I chose an apparently simple object: the shirt button, which has undergone numerous material transformations over time”

The result is a paper that examines an alternative vision of bioplastics and their current state of the art within the field of design. In a world where plastic has become synonymous with waste and pollution, this research investigates the often-overlooked history of organic plastics and analyses contemporary examples.
The study introduces a new term: byplastics, plastics derived from the by-products of other production activities.

This research was Supervised by @anniina.koivu @brynjarsigurdarson and @paula_muehlena ; and led of the development of ACE, a diploma project of @marco.ciacci at @ecal_ch
The scrapbook and paper can be read at @ecal_library

Selected spreads from 𝘔𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦, a visual research publication exploring time perception, developed alongside the typeface Minut 🕐

How long does a Minut last? Time is standardized, but its experience follows no rules, being mathematically equal for all, but felt differently by each. Minut explores this gap: a play on words between “minute” and “unit,” it is a type family built around four styles defined by width constraints—72 units (proportional), 9, 3, and 1 (monospace). Each style reflects a degree of mechanization, inspired by unit systems used in proportional spacing typewriters. Celebrating the beauty of constraint, the characters of Minut find their own rhythm, generating textures with subtle variations. Rather than being interpolated, each style of Minut is drawn individually, prioritizing the overall texture of each font—going against the limitless flexibility of digital design.

Typeset in
Minut, Minut 9, Minut 3 and Minut Mono + italics + bold
Minut is in development, trials available 📧

Resona was born as both a dancing script and a tame roman, seeking its roots in the works of Jacques-François Rosart, Johann Michael Fleischmann, and the Baroque era. The roman was designed based on the first developments of the italic script, creating a solid companion that serves well as body text. While the roman provides a fixed structure, the script flows across the page like a thread, weaving titles and descriptions together.

Inspired by the delicate yet intricate shapes of crochet, Resona’s specimen pairs texts from two contrasting manuals: The New Woman’s Survival Catalog (1973) and Learn to Crochet, N.233 (1946). These two texts represent different worlds, one deeply rooted in the stereotypical domestic roles of women, and the other a revolutionary guide for independence and feminist consciousness.

Crochet is the common thread, a practice that has historically brought women together. In these gatherings, conversations flowed alongside the stitches, creating a resonance of voices. By disguising the Survival Catalogue within the crochet instructions, the specimen plays on the powerful act of coming together, where small, domestic moments become a space for connection and shared strength.

Details of my latest type revival project Cornell, in use in “Cosmic Calendar: A Typographic Visualization”.

Revival project mentored by @alice_savoie at @ecalmatd @ecal_ch

How long ago is one billion years ago?

The Cosmic Calendar is a method developed by the American astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan to visualize the chronology of the events of the universe in an intuitive way.

The size of the typeface in this publication decreases as you progress through the pages. Starting from January 1st, the typeface proportionally becomes smaller, helping visualize the passage of time.

The small text typeset in 10 pt depicts the size of the present time, to provide the reader with a constant visual comparison, highlighting how small and young we are compared to the entire history of the Universe.

Layout and custom backslanted typeface for the redesign of the catalogue “Potential Worlds: Planetary Memories & Eco-Fictions”.
The typeface takes inspiration from the topic of climate change, defined by the curators as an “hyperobject”, something that is not contained by time and space as regular objects, which “permeates every element along their path and can spread indefinite distances”.
The backslant creates a dynamic and unsettling feeling, playing with horizontal and vertical elements and unexpected rotations in the layout.
