Believing in myself and in my talent has been the greatest struggle of my personal and professional life. I seem to have this evil super ability to tell myself that I’m not good enough or not talented enough or not good looking enough or…just not enough at all.

So when one of my dearest and oldest NYC friends, @katiegassert , asked me to join her and a bunch of fancy Broadway folks at @thegreenroom42 to sing in a concert benefiting the terrific organization, @selfhelpafrica , I said sure of course…and then immediately began convincing myself that I would be a complete disaster.
*
*
Just moments before I went up to sing, I said to @andrecatrini , “I can’t do this. I feel like I’m gonna vomit.” And as always, in his gentle way, he told me I could. There was no doubt in his mind.
*
*
And then he secretly filmed me. 🤣🤣
*
*
I’m really proud of myself for moving through the fear and for getting up there and doing what I love to do.
*
*
I’m not sure if I’ll ever be someone who doesn’t get scared or who doesn’t criticize himself. But I do know I will always strive to be a person who does not let that fear and self-doubt stop him.

Being an actor is hard. It just is. I have never been the sort of actor who books all the time. Every win I have had has been hard won. And I’m proud of that.

But every now and then, this industry or the universe or something gives a little gift. Come From Away has been that for me - a true gift of a role in a gorgeous show.
*
I have had the great privilege of doing the show twice now and both experiences have been the best of my career. Spending my days in rehearsal with generous and talented actors and musicians led by passionate directors…it’s the sort of job that only comes around so often.
*
Come From Away is a show about immense kindness. It’s a show that reminds us of how beautiful humanity can be. How lovely.
*

Sometimes the world feels nothing but scary.
*
Sometimes it feels as though nothing we do matters - as though any attempt at positive change is useless.
*
Sometimes it feels as though we’re alone.
*
Sometimes I believe these feelings.
*
In 2018, in an effort to try to be helpful and to prove to ourselves that connection, storytelling and kindness really do matter, @dubbsweinblatt and I created @craftyourtruth - an organization that pairs LGBTQ youth with professional teaching artists.
*
They spend the day sharing stories and from these stories they create a piece of art - a dance, a monologue, a scene, a speech, a song, etc
*
Every time we meet for a Craft Your Truth workshop, I am reminded that real change and real connection are possible and powerful. I leave feeling hopeful and inspired by the younger generation of queer people.
*
I’m so grateful to Dubbs for their passion and commitment to this project. I learn so much from their example of dedication, activism and empathy.
*
And special thanks to @jaredmbrown for making this incredible sizzle real. We are SO grateful to you!
*
Remember that there is always hope. Do not give into cynicism and defeat. And if you feel yourself beginning to do so, reach out to me and get involved with craft your truth. You’ll be glad you did. 🌈🌈🌈🌈 by @gkidwell
