All roads lead to bamboo, both extremely functional and is the backbone of Asian utility, and possess fluid beauty, if you’ve ever watched a bamboo bush sway in the wind. @sabrinaraso put me in my Marc Le Bihan dress we bought in Paris, and it looks like the inverse of the bamboos!! taken in Taipei, Taiwan by @gko___

Ink on Rice Paper

More often than not, I’ll paint bamboo in company of each other. The name of the painting means, one thread does not make a chord. It kind of reminds me of me of that exercise we were shown as kids, one stick is quick to snap but 10 sticks is impossible. I love companionship and I love my best friends. One stalk is me, the other is someone who makes my life better.

I did this painting in 2019 when I returned back to Wellington to visit family, after graduating in Auckland. It now sits in the Te Papa collection!!

Me and mum started Chinese painting when I was 6 up until I finished high school. After 5 years of not painting this was the first piece I did. The bamboo is stronger and the rock more grounded than before!!

On my second day of being in Taiwan I visited this beautiful calligraphy store to repurchase some staple brushes and ink I had left in New Zealand. I will be painting again!! by @gko___

My special interest is scanning, it feels like collecting Pokémon. It feels different to taking a photo because it’s way more admin, I have to sit through 1 minute of ads per ten photos because I refuse to pay for the app, which is precisely why it holds more value, I worked for it!!

This was my Hilma Af Klint experience through a series of scans. Art work, wall text and me resting. I felt like I was preserving the spirituality of the art work by sucking it all in through my scans. taken in Paris, France by @gko___

“Fallen Fruit”

Ben and I worked together again, this time to bring Chinese painting to life.

I recall an analogy that my godmother told me when I went on a solo trip to China in my early 20s. It’s stuck with me and has become a mindset I return to. I used traditional water colour techniques to paint out elements while Ben created a world and animated the brush strokes, bringing to life, what once was static.

Aki designed the sound that so beautifully frames and runs through the piece.
