On the occasion of Bridge opening up at @americanart, I took a moment to reflect and gather some images of the work as it has grown and evolved, with the support of a huge group of curators, collectors, fabricators, and family. Thank you to everyone that has supported @tommiesmith68 and I along the way! This is a tremedous milestone and we are forever grateful.

1- We started with a historic sacrifice and iconic gesture. @tommiesmith68
2- Prototyped a 6-arm version with big dreams. @themistakeroom @joysimmonsdivadoc @laurieziegler
3- Presented first draft at @expochicago @shamimmomin16
4- Studio Museum in Harlem @naimajoy @thelmagolden
5- With Drawn Arms at High Museum and San Jose Museum of Art @honoguy @artpilgrimz
6- 5x5 Biennial in Washington DC - angled to point at the White House 🙂 @shamimmomin16
7- @pacegallery @lauren_panzo @andriahickey
8- Kaiser School of Medicine in Pasadena
9- Final Destination: Smithsonian American Art Museum! @americanart #sarahnewman

Many curators saw the vision and gave us the opportunity to present to the public, dozens of collectors and supporters contributed though patronage, and as many institutions opened up their doors to a sometimes difficult but always generative conversation with their communities about how creative gestures might help open up social discourse.

We had dreamt about the Smithsonian being the final resting place since Day 1, and I always love it when a plan comes together! by @gkstudio

Reposting the flags we made last year that become more meaningful to us every day- they started as all white flags doused in tar that then light themselves on fire in a moment of spontaneous combustion - the artistic gesture is actually the extinguishing of the flame, and the visual remnants are both the charred exterior surface that hangs as a reminder of this volatile moment and the pristine shadow of the flag within that is not damaged- a hopeful symbol that stubbornly exists invisibly inside and will not be forgotten by @gkstudio

As we are counting down to our Leading with Love Community Gathering in the garden on 10/4 to honor Michael and celebrate our grantees I was reminded of his post sharing his time there - “Meditative and joyful Sundays spent at The Underground Museum viewing the art of the late Noah Davis and enjoying the sun and surroundings outside in the Purple Garden…. One of my favorite places in Los Angeles for so many years. It’s such a beautiful, healing, vibrant and rich space.” We look forward to connecting with you there next Sunday. by @gkstudio

Today on TCI 🎥 Multidisciplinary Artist Glenn Kaino (@gkstudio) speaks with filmmaker and professional soccer player Reina Bonta (@reinabonta) about compound bodies of work, staggering projects, and art as a generous space. Read the interview via the link in our bio. 🪄

ID: Quotes from a conversation with multidisciplinary Artist Glenn Kaino that read...

Slide 1: “I don’t think the general population understands how scary it is for any creator to put something out into the world.”

Slide 2: “It all starts with the belief that the subject matter that you are spending all of your time, money that you don’t have, resources, and energy on is important for people to hear and see.”

Slide 3: “A good return on investment in making art is: Did you imagine a better world?”

Slide 4: “I think of art as a space of inquiry, a space of slippage and imagination, a generous space that is not bound by conventional business logic.”

Slide 5: “In the space of art making and protected presentation where you’re not bound by the market in different ways, you get to think deeply and rigorously about very challenging issues.”

Slide 6: “People say, “It’s almost like you have three or four careers.” I do. I just layer them.”

Slide 7: “Years ago, I took upon the study of magic as a way of thinking about systems of belief. The magician said to me, ‘Glenn, when you vanish that coin in front of an audience, you have to believe that it’s dissolving into thin air. Because if you don’t believe, no one standing in front of you is going to believe.’”

Slide 8: “What a powerful thing for me as an artist. Really, that set me off. You can’t make a successful documentary and not actually believe that you’re changing the world.”

Slide 9: “You might not change the world. Very few people do. But you have to believe you’re going to because no one is going to watch a film that the filmmaker doesn’t think is going to change the world. You can feel it.” by @gkstudio

We were excited to see the Glenn Kaino / @gkstudio “The Distance of the Sun” installation at the Los Angeles Metro Center this week on the way to see USA vs Turkey in the World Cup! Suspended above the escalators this spiral of imagined spacecraft transformed into 3d origami symbolizes our collective dreams of explorations and connection. Art and sports have the wonderful power to bring people together to celebrate our collective humanity.

We worked with Glenn in 2017 on the project “Observatories” for the Center for the Arts in Jackson Hole curated by @camilleobering , @matthewdayjackson , and Andy Kincaid. It is a pleasure to see Glenn continue to thrive as an artist and creator. If you’re in LA, head to the LAX Transit Center to see Glenn’s new installation.

Congratulations, Glenn!! 🙌

As my new public works start to come to life, throwing back to the first ever large scale sculpture I made for the @thewarholmuseum in Pittsburg. Titled Arch, it was a transformer made from the bridges of the city of robotics… the community really rallied around it and it found a home at the Pittsburgh airport for years. It will have a new home soon but I’m grateful for all the support after all these years. Fun fact, thousands of people (millions?) have seen it and many think it moves or should move, which was by design. When I made the first sketches and 3-d models I recalled a story told to me from Todd McFarlane when I was working at Image Comics (employee #4 of Shadowline) in art school, about the dynamic pose for Spawn 8 he used as an homage to his work on Spider Man. That was my pose reference! by @gkstudio

Peace is not a zero sum game. We cannot have peace just by stopping war, we have to invest in it. That was one of the provocations that I discovered through my project Tank. Everything going on today inspired me to share.

The US military sinks tanks in the ocean to erase remnants of our wars and try to create artificial reefs. It struck me as a poetic paradox: At the bottom of the ocean, some of the smallest organisms on Earth were reclaiming the instruments of human displacement. I rented an M60 tank and cast it into 17 different pieces. Working with marine biologists from around the country, we built a lab to research how to accelerate coral growth.

Two years later, we exhibited Tank, an archipelago of organic cartographies. The vitrines (tanks) were mini infinity pools, crafted to present in the context of art and to show off the appropriate viewing angle from the top.

What we discovered though, was that beneath the surface, every night, when corals encroach upon each others’ space, they fight at the borders, stinging their neighbors with tentacles and chemical warfare. Said another way, outside of our view, non-intelligent actors create colonial nation-states that resemble our geographies and are in constant violent conflict.

This observation speaks to a natural, default state of constant war, but can also be a lesson that our humanity is earned, not deserved. We cannot simply ‘stop war,’ because the act of stopping war isn’t possible in isolation, it is a byproduct of an investment into peace. We must earn our humanity through consciousness, empathy, forgiveness and love. We must invest into our humanity, knowing it will come at a loss of resources, individually and collectively, but it is the only way to gain our soul.

The last image is of one of the small corals, now thriving in a commercial aquarium in Chicago, they have grown up! by @gkstudio

Preview of my newest commission for the Burbank Airport, titled When We Reflect. This work was inspired by the camouflage nets that Japanese American prisoners created at the Santa Anita Assembly Center during WW2 - my family was incarcerated there. These nets were used to hide buildings from Japanese bombers, buildings that included the old Burbank Airport which back then was a commercial facility. I chose to transform the pattern and materials into an artwork that serves in opposition to the original, a device that reflects the people below in community, but also allows us to reflect upon the the history of imprisonment of our own citizens then and now. Opening to the public in the fall! by @gkstudio
