I’ve always been fascinated by the relationship between Britain’s love affair with period drama and its uneasy relationship with its colonial past.

After the Brexit referendum, in 2017 I made CLASH—an experimental doc about artists of colour trying to make a period drama, asking who gets to belong in history and who gets written out of it.

Birthday today...Coming out of some of the hardest years of my life and into what I hope is a more integrated, creatively emboldened and happier future.

I live with #ocd & #cptsd -both of which have a way of stealing time. When your nervous system is wired for survival, years can disappear into fear, compulsions and self-punishment. The best way I can describe cPTSD is that it’s like living with an aquarium around your head, separating you from the world, filled with piranhas that threaten to eat your brain unless you constantly feed them with ruminations.

Last year I spent months at a trauma centre in South Africa, which helped me finally process decades of trauma. But healing also comes with grief: grief for how much of life has been spent surviving rather than living.

Drag has been one of the few consistent sources of joy in my life. I was about to tell Glamrou’s story on television after five years of development, only for it to disappear during the industry’s contraction. Losing that hurt a great deal.
And then there’s the grief of being Arab right now. What’s happening in the world is extremely hard to process.

I’ve spent a decade working in television, and there has still never been a British Arab TV drama created by an Arab writer. I’ve come painfully close, including losing a greenlit series. If anything, it’s made me more determined to keep fighting for our stories.

One of the most healing things I’ve done recently was making ORIGINAL SIN, an unapologetic, angry, absurd, queer Muslim Arab psychodrama that expresses the world as I really feel and see it.

It was quite a confusing experience previously releasing a film that reflected a very different relationship to the world than the one I was privately experiencing. So it was cathartic to create something that expressed the anger, grief, fear & darkness I was truly carrying.

I’m still here. I’ve rediscovered the confidence to make work I’m truly excited about, and for the first time in a long time, I’m genuinely excited about what’s next. I feel like there might even be joy on the horizon!

This from ORIGINAL SIN felt fitting today…here’s the incredible @mojeanaria performing a twisted monologue about fathers, family, grief, trauma, dom daddies, self-hate, douches, semen…all whilst fetishising his own Arab identity and Islamic faith to satiate white liberal guilt. I’m fascinated in the link between lies and trauma, and how trauma can push us to dress up certain stories into fictitious costumes that seem to fit the intensity of feeling inside them. The link between trauma and performance is something I’ve been really fascinated by as a filmmaker recently, and it was cathartic to explore that here 😈

Later in the film, Mojean says my favourite line: “if the pain is real, it isn’t a lie, it’s just…a costume” 🎞️
