Glasgow Independent Studio is currently in a transitional phase, seeking fresh expertise to enrich our board. We require passionate and driven individuals who are keen to demonstrate their skills in the arts sector.

Our aim is to foster an inclusive and diverse environment led by a Board of Trustees, demonstrating varied expertise and lived experience to further instil the charity's ethos as an artist-run collective within the Glasgow community.

Applications from those with backgrounds in art organisations, charitable organisations, arts management, HR, fundraising, finance, contract and/or property law are particularly welcome.

For more information please email bod@gis.uk.com or apply by sending us your CV and an expression of interest outlining your suitability for the role. by @glasgowindependentstudio

Street Level have been championing photography, participation and production in Glasgow since 1989. We are a gallery and an open access photographic production facility, committed to quality and equality across all our activity.
Street Level are not leaving our space in T103 in the foreseeable future and we are open for the public and members as always. However we are facing real challenges and our longer term future is at risk with drastically increased rent and service charge costs being introduced from April 01 by City Property. SLP are working with the T103 Tenants Forum to lobby MP’s and MSP’s to persuade GCC, the owners of Trongate 103, to look again at a sustainable solution that protects the building as a not-for-profit arts hub.
Many have asked what can you do to support us.

There is a petition on change.org that you can sign and share, save trongate 103 from closure.
There is a community protest: Friday 27th March, 12-2pm at 229 George St, G1 1QU.
Many thanks for your solidarity and support, from the Street Level team

Glasgow Independent Studio (GIS) has received notice to quit its lease at Trongate 103 by 27 March 2026.

This is not simply a rent issue. Trongate 103 was developed through public funding, led by Glasgow City Council, to provide stable, affordable creative space for artists in the city centre. That model — based on long-term sustainability and public access — was central to its creation.

Over time, that commitment has been withdrawn. The building has been moved into a commercial property model, and the conditions that made it viable for artist-led organisations have been eroded. We are now being asked to operate under terms that are financially unsustainable. It is not an eviction but it functions as one.

Alongside our studios, GIS delivers free public programming through Glasgow Project Room — our artist-run exhibition space providing free exhibition opportunities. We support over 60 artists and provide a vital, non-commercial platform for emerging and underrepresented practices.

What we are now facing is a shift away from that founding vision — one that puts both artists and public access to culture at risk.

We are calling for support to ensure that affordable, stable creative space — and free, accessible cultural provision — remain at the heart of Glasgow’s cultural life.

If this matters to you, please sign the petition, share and help raise awareness. Link in Bio.

Trongate 103 – Latest Update

On 2 April 2026, a motion supporting Trongate 103 was unanimously passed at Glasgow City Council, recognising the building’s value and the need for intervention.

A £200,000 Culture and Creative Industry Property Support Fund has been announced to provide small grants across the city. While positive, it remains unclear how much will reach Trongate 103 despite the urgency.

The Council has committed to further discussions with tenants, but no timeframe has been set and the situation remains critical.

New temporary lease arrangements have introduced significantly higher rent and service charges, with occupancy costs rising by an estimated 400%. Over the next year, this amounts to approximately extra £500,000 for organisations (non-profit charities) in the building.

The impact is already evident. Two organisations are developing exit strategies due to unaffordability, putting the wider cultural hub at risk.

All organisations are experiencing rapid resource decline, leading to operational cuts.

While the Council’s support is welcome, the immediate risk to Trongate 103 remains unresolved. Without timely action, Glasgow risks losing a vital part of its cultural infrastructure.

We thank the public for its continued support. The strength of the community has been invaluable, and the shared commitment to Glasgow as a City of Culture remains strong.

I got my first shared studio @glasgowindependentstudio in 2018, before getting my own space a couple of years later. I can’t express enough the importance of @glasgowindependentstudio in providing affordable studio spaces to those on low or non-existent incomes.

Similarly, @glasgowprojectroom provides a free, high quality exhibition space for artists to show work at early career stage, providing an important stepping stone for graduates or those who’ve spent a bit longer working out what type of artist they might be. GPR is a developmental space, that encourages experimentation without restriction or commercial angle. There is no way I would have been able to move my practice forward without the kindness and support of both GIS and GPR.

I found myself thinking about my connections to the building and just how important they have been to me over the years. I remember taking a dark room course @streetlevelphotoworks a couple of years after leaving secondary school, including the photographs in my portfolio to apply to @glasgowschoolart - After leaving art school I joined @transmissionglasgow and I’ve since gone on to take classes in screenprinting and etching at @glasgowprintstudio

As a studio holder @glasgowindependentstudio we are uniquely lucky (and grateful) in that we are part of an extended family of arts organisations including @glasgowprintstudio @streetlevelphotoworks @projectability @glasgowprojectroom @gmacfilm @sharmanka.theatre @transmissionglasgow - all located in @trongate103 - Five floors of beautiful, kind, caring and abundantly creative people whose livelihoods are each dependent on this delicate, symbiotic ecosystem existing.

City Property, the owners of the building want to increase the rent and service charges to an amount that will give each of these charitable organisations no option other than to close, leaving hundreds of artists and art workers with very uncertain futures.

Artist @garethreidart reflects on the importance of GIS and Trongate 103:

The studios at Trongate 103 were vital to my development as an artist. Affordable spaces like those provided by GIS allow artists to focus on their practice and creative development rather than constantly dealing with the financial pressures and struggling to make ends meet. They also offer stability, community, and mental health benefits that are essential in our cities but often overlooked.

Volunteer-run spaces like the Glasgow Project Room enable artists to become established and contribute hugely to the cultural life of the city. Trongate 103 was created to support a diverse range of art and artists — not to generate profit — and its loss would be felt deeply across Glasgow, Scotland, and the wider arts community.
