Memes, as we know them today, are an essential part of internet culture, but their origins are deeper and more fascinating than many realize. The term “meme” was first coined by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in 1976, in his book *The Selfish Gene*. He used it to describe how cultural ideas, behaviors, or trends spread and evolve in a manner similar to genetic evolution. In this context, a meme wasn’t limited to just images or videos—it could be any idea or practice that spreads from person to person, like a catchy phrase or a popular dance.

However, it wasn’t until the rise of the internet and digital media that memes began to take the form we recognize today. The early days of meme culture can be traced back to the late 1990s and early 2000s when the internet started to bloom. Websites like Something Awful, YTMND, and Newgrounds hosted early iterations of viral humor, including image macros, like the “I Can Has Cheezburger” cat memes, which helped shape the meme landscape. These first memes were often simple, repetitive images with humorous or absurd captions, serving as a playful commentary on everyday life or internet culture.

By the mid-2000s, meme-sharing platforms like Reddit, 4chan, and Facebook helped memes spread even faster, evolving into more diverse formats, from reaction GIFs to short videos and viral challenges. These memes transcended traditional media boundaries, connecting people across the globe, and began influencing pop culture in significant ways. In fact, memes have now become so integrated into everyday communication that they often reflect societal moods, political events, or global movements. by @glass
