‘Returning the Skin’ explores Irish–Icelandic connections to the sea, taking the Selkie as a symbol of loss, transformation, control and freedom.

The central work - part ritual, part art piece - involved the durational creation of a protective skin that eventually escaped the gallery space.

Created on location in Hellisandur, Iceland on a mobile glass furnace I used recycled window glass. The people who visited the workshop were invited to blow glass into moulds made from seaweed. This gave them an experience of the material and I chatted to them about the ideas behind the exhibition.

After the exhibition the work was dismantled, the pieces were smashed and recycled. I have only kept a very limited number of them to incorporate into future work. The concept was to work in a way that allowed visitors to experience something beautiful, connected to nature through materials but not own it.

The figure of the Selkie in, 'Returning the Skin' asks us to think about gentler ways of living, in harmony with our environment.

The exhibition was part of @glowingglacier and supported by @cultureireland @alexander.tutsek.stiftung

Description of images - a series of images showing different angles of the 'Returning the Skin' exhibition at Snæfellsjökull National Park Center. It is a grey concrete room with a large window at one end. The view is onto a green mossy and rocky exterior. The installation is made up of series of abstract glass forms, over 100 pieces, laid out on the ground. They have a green blue glow, are soft flowing shapes and appear to be making their way towards the big window. They climb around different wood, rope and a small seating area to reach the outdoors. by @glasspool.de

It's been a rainy and windy few days recently, but today the sun is out the Snaefellsjokul is showing off and it's a beautiful day.

It's the best time to visit Laura Sonne Lund's exhibition where you can see her artwork housed just across the road from the mythical glacier that inspired the work.

Open 12-7pm daily, last day is the 19th July.

We are delighted that Christiane Böhm—art historian, cultural practitioner, and now first-time sound artist—has joined us for the festival.

After hosting an artist talk with Louise Lang at 3Walls Gallery, Christiane stepped into a new creative role, exploring the relationship between sound, hot glass, and place. Building on her background in art theory, she created an experimental sound work that brings together field recordings from her journey to Iceland—from the ferry crossing to the landscapes between Seyðisfjörður and Hellissandur—along with ambient sounds and found audio material.

Her piece enters into dialogue with Louise Lang’s Glassfolie and Ida With’s site-specific glass installation, creating a layered resonant space between ephemeral sound and transformative material.

Seeing people who engage with the festival discover new artistic paths has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this edition. From the beginning, our hope was to bring people together around the material of glass in a landscape shaped by ice and fire—and then simply see what would unfold. The many thoughtful and unexpected responses have been truly inspiring.

Christiane’s participation was made possible with the financial assistance of the European Union. The views expressed are those of the artist and do not necessarily reflect the official opinion of the European Union.
