For five minutes, we thought we were going to end the world.

25 years ago today, I wasn’t watching TV. I was 27, a Lieutenant on USS Tennessee, two days into a 90-day patrol. An island with no windows, no news, no phone calls home.

We learned about the towers a sentence at a time over the most secure network in the world. Then we received what we believed to be an execution order.

For five minutes, 165 of us thought we were going to launch.

I wrote about those five minutes a few years ago — about being the firing pin in the gun, about two shipmates who had to be relieved from watch, and about watching the CNN tape a month later on VHS.

Most people remember where they were when they watched it happen. A few of us remember five minutes underwater.

Hard to believe it’s been a whole year since we last celebrated you, but what a year it’s been! 12 months of you is never enough for the year, but I’m happy to share just a little of it with everyone. You have changed my life in a million little ways, including the love and effort we put into celebrating each other in our family… so now it’s YOUR turn!

I am more than just blessed to be yours, I am SAVED. The best description I’ve heard so far of what it’s like to be a spouse is that it’s the one person you choose to bear witness to your entire life and thereby give it meaning. I am so proud to be witness to all that you’ve built, overcome, and built again. You are stronger than most would expect, and I am heartened to be the one who knows you best. Your kindness and love softens my edges and brings joy and life into our home in permanent and meaningful ways. You are stunning, sharp, king, and stylish AF.

In just a month, we’ll be celebrating for real - in the backyard of our family home - and writing a whole set of new chapters in a book that many people thought was nearly finished… I can’t wait.

@fashionably_late_mommy WE DID A THING! @fl_crusaders @faithlutheran.football Cooper led us up the mountain… and Carson led us back down! An incredible way to start our season and our school year - surrounded by faith and fellowship. We are really blessed to be a part of this community! Let’s go CRUSADERS!!
