The legendary ice cave in Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix is gone.

Quite a few years ago I met Glen Plake in Interlaken, Switzerland. As Glen was presenting there with his famous mohawk , I got an idea for a photo that later became one of my master pieces.

Few weeks later we met at Plake’s apartment in Chamonix where Glen had his cheek against the kitchen table whilst Kimberly (Glen’s wife) was pressing the hair flat using the table as ironing board. The mighty mohawk was about to be up.

After all the preparation we found ourselves on top of the Aiguille du Midi. I brought my power flashes up there and while I was setting them up, Glen was relaxing and looking at the recent snow conditions.
So, my idea is was to highlight the mohawk in the ice cave. I wanted to involve skiing and mountaineering in the photo with the legend himself. Several shots and moving the flashes around I was finally happy with the result. I knew that moment that I captured something special. What I didn’t know that years later, 2026, this ice cave was gone.

As glaciers are melting really fast, beginning of the summer 2026 it was time to say good buy to famous Aiguille du Midi ice cave entrance to the mountains. Skiers, climbers, alpinists, tourists… will still find their way to the mountains but without this ice cave that has endless amounts of stories to share. This is one of them.

Thanks @glenplake and Kimberly to make these photos to happen. I guess you never should wait for the right time when it comes to the mother Nature. Next time it might not be there anymore.

Let’s hope for a snowy winter,
Tero

Dude! Are you the famous skier! This group of climbers got surprised by @glenplake some years ago. Not everyday that mr. Plake is taking your vacation group photo. That day me and Glen captured some long living photos on top of the Aiguille du Midi. More photos and story coming soon. #photography #photos #chamonix #hairstyle #mountains @chamonixmontblanc by @glenplake

Featuring 80's Skiing Icon: Glen Plake

Before he was teaching PSIA clinics or crossing the country in a custom Freightliner, Glen Plake was the Mohawk-sporting rebel who redefined skiing on camera. His breakout role in 1988's Blizzard of Aahhh's turned him into one of the defining faces of 80's extreme skiing — equal parts hotdogger, cliff-jumper, and personality.

Now a U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Famer, Plake has spent decades giving back to the sport that made him famous. He's logged PSIA certifications across five divisions, running his "Down Home Ski Tour" to visit small ski areas across the country, and even teaching aspiring young guides to ski in Nepal.

From punk icon to sport ambassador, Plake's evolution says a lot about what keeps skiing's soul alive.

@glenplake is the most legendary, the most known skier of our time—maybe of all time—and I’ve interviewed him more than anyone. But this podcast series couldn’t end without a final Plake episode, and this one was timed perfectly, the day after Freeride was named an Olympic sport. You can bet Glen has a strong opinion about that, and we also talk about FIS, SIA, skiing, life, Kimberley, and so much more. It’s another fun episode with a living legend and I get some new stories out of Glen. Link in Profile

We made it back from Trailherox and #overlandexpo. The new Buckstop Ram 5500 performed amazing. You can see the Buckstop action recap report on Buckstop Truckware FB account. Trail HeroX was amazing!! It was so cool to get your coordinates each day and go explore our way to camp and face the challenges for the day. I have not explored this part of the country a whole lot. It was great having the opportunity to see new areas. New country make new friends with the cast and crew. Whether you do it for a show or for yourself the one thing I learned is to get ro the backcountry and explore there’s so much cool stuff out there to see and great people to meet. I never thought I’d be camping on a rock one night in the middle of Arizona eating French cheeses from Glen Plake and Kodiak barbecuing up as Glen said amazing dead red. It was a marinated tri-tip to die for.Big shout out to @xoemoon for chasing in the Trailready Jeep and @exploringstillconnected for all their media work on the trip. There were some long days for chase and media. #camping #overlanding #805bear by @glenplake
