Since the early 2010s, a new microtonal scene has formed worldwide, especially online. It is genre-open, community-based and experimental. Discord, YouTube and podcasts are just as important as concerts and instrument making. Untwelving brings this scene to Munich live for the first time on this scale. Untwelving means: de-twelve. It refers to overcoming the familiar 12-tone equal temperament in favour of new sound systems. The alternative division of the octave into more or less than twelve equal steps opens up new tonal spaces for a young international scene between pop, rock, electronic, jazz and new music.

Asra3 @ Untwelving /together with Tam Tam Treppenbar

Barcelona-based music producer, singer, and DJ with eclectic, playful, ethereal, multidisciplinary, and experimental tendencies, currently exploring non-conventional tuning systems such as 53-EDO, the harmonic series, and extended just intonation.

They will present a DJ set at Untwelving exclusively featuring self-produced tracks based on Dominican dembow hits, xenharmonically reharmonized and reimagined through modified melodies and polyrhythms, venturing into visceral, highly danceable, otherworldly territories in a wild challenge to some musical conventions.

FastFast @ UNTWELVING

We’re excited to share a glimpse into the sound world of FastFast aka James Mulvale, who will join us at UNTWELVING this May in Munich.

His album Xen On is a key work in contemporary microtonal pop — a bold exploration of EDO (Equal Divisions of the Octave) pushed deep into the language of synthwave, EDM and pop music. Familiar textures meet unfamiliar tunings, opening a space where pop becomes something subtly uncanny.
