Survivor. Saskia Ozols. Oil on Canvas with Conte and Charcoal. 60 x 36″ 2017.

This painting, Survivor, was part of a series of paintings I did about passages in 2017. Passage between place, situation and environment. It is a large experimental piece that utilizes traditional media in a non-traditional way. With these pieces I explore the movement from one state to another through a combination of gestures, poses and non-traditional mark-making.

Traditional drawing always structures my experimental pieces, however these paintings explore the communication of feeling, emotion, and experience in a different way. Although classically trained in many media, I enjoy experimenting with classical form in ways that offer variable interpretations of familiar imagery.

I worked on this piece utilizing small charcoal drawing as reference. The drawing is from direct observation and I made it while sitting under a tree on the Mississippi River.

Save the Date | The Bird Show
March 21 – May 23
Opening Reception: March 28, 5–8 PM
Curated by Carol Leake for Studio Waveland
Although many animals have captured the human imagination, none have done so with such frequency as birds. Their flight stirs something deep within us—freedom, transcendence, a longing to rise beyond the earthly plane. To see a bird take wing is to feel, however briefly, that we might do the same.

The Bird Show gathers more than 70 artists—primarily from the New Orleans and Gulf Coast region, with several notable exceptions—in an exhibition that explores the myth, symbolism, beauty, and ecological importance of birds. With over 11,000 species (and possibly closer to 20,000), birds remain the most diverse group of land vertebrates on Earth, though many have been lost to extinction. This exhibition honors both their fragility and their enduring presence.
Hosted at Studio Waveland, the show unfolds near the vital wetlands of southern Mississippi and Louisiana, home and migratory haven to countless bird species.

The exhibition celebrates the astonishing beauty and ancient lineage of birds—descendants of dinosaurs who shared the planet long before humans—and highlights their crucial role in sustaining ecosystems, particularly in the Southeast.

“I hope you love birds too.
It’s economical, it saves going to heaven.”
—Emily Dickinson
