I had an awesome time at New York Climate Week, volunteering for the Green Jobs Pavilion! More than anything, this event had such an atmosphere of hope, community, and love for our Earth.

While at NYCW, I did my best to act as sustainably as possible. Most of the meals I ordered from restaurants were vegetarian, and most of my food came from event leftovers that otherwise would have gone to waste. I also made sure to bring my coffee tumbler to save single-use cups, and my sustainable sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, and body wash! Final chick counts for the 2026 season!! All named chicks made it to 18 days old (our high estimate for the total chicks who made it through the summer). Broods with stars are those with at least one chick who made it to 24+ days old (definitely able to fly)!

Thanks for following along with this field season with me :) by @glo.inthefield

A bit of a different post today! As my fieldwork in North Dakota is coming to a close, I wanted to use this account to speak out about something else I am super passionate about: Sustainability!

If you are interested in my fieldwork, then I encourage you to make decisions that will help keep the areas I work in plastic-free. I hope this post will help introduce you all to zero waste concepts and how to get started if you are not in these spaces already!

As an added bonus, use the link in my bio at ZeroWasteStore.com to get 15% off! Whether you are replenishing ZWS products you already own or are getting them for the first time, grab a bit of a discount, on me :)

spray day! (ft. our cool TNC branded hats)

piping plovers nest on largely unvegetated gravel and sand/mud. if vegetation encroaches too much on their habitat (more than ~30% coverage), the plovers won’t initiate nesting. now that basically all of our little guys have moved on and begun migration south, we are clearing out any vegetation on the beaches through mechanical (hand-pulling or weed whipping) and chemical (spraying herbicide) methods so that our little buddies can return next year and keep the cycle going! and of course vegetation removal is kept to lake edges and with water-safe herbicide so the rest of the grassland is safe and protected🐣🌾💚 by @glo.inthefield

a series of birds! here is a fledgling plover chick, nearly old enough to fly and soon will be migrating back south!

eared grebes on the water

burrowing owl and CHICKS!

phalaropes spinning (my favorite birds on the preserve! aren’t they so silly)

a young plover chick learning the distinct plover head bob, or what we scientists call a “PWEE-DO!”

red-headed woodpecker

killdeer chick

juvenile bald eagle (or perhaps a golden…. hard to tell 🫠) by @glo.inthefield

photo dump! swipe to the end for the cutest little baby plover —>

1: kayaking! some of the plovers nested on small islands, so we have to occasionally kayak out to monitor their egg development.
2: cows cows cows (conveniently blocking the two track but it’s ok, they are cute)
3: angry territorial plovers hunch over, puff up, and make a trilling call to fight off competitors (sound on!)
4: a full nest of plover eggs
5: an angry marbled godwit yelling at us
6: baby plovers on their feet — these guys are only ~5 days old!
7: sharp-tailed grouse chicks we stumbled on in the field
8: burrowing owl on the side of the road
9: i fell into a hole :( aka an unexpected danger of working in the prairie grasslands
10: the cutest darn baby plover you’ve ever seen! by @glo.inthefield

welcome to the world little ones!!! say hi to petey, penny, little bo pete, and copernicus, our first chicks of the 2026 season. (shoutout lake peterson!)

an educational moment here: as you can see, the top one (copernicus, obviously) is still very clearly wet. this means he has just hatched out of his egg and has no thermoregulatory ability. if you ever see a baby bird in a nest that looks wet, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY! if the adult does not come back to brood soon, the chick can die due to heat loss. as soon as we spotted these guys, we snapped one picture and left the area so that mama could come back to take care of her babies! taken in Turtle Lake, North Dakota by @glo.inthefield
