There are a handful of spots for the Global Protagonists rhino rewilding mission we are hosting next month in South Africa from October 11-18. Please click on the link in our bio or reach out directly for more information. 🦏🦏🦏

Across Africa, the Rhino Rewild initiative is quietly changing what rhino conservation looks like – shifting the focus from rescue to rebuilding, and from crisis response to long-term protection.

Rooiberg is one of the landscapes where that shift is happening now, with the foundations of a new population being laid in real time.

If you want to be part of conservation while it is still being shaped, rather than looking back once the story is finished, this is that moment.

This is not about seeing conservation. It is about being part of its beginning.

Participants are embedded directly into active rhino protection work during a critical phase of the project. In practice, this will include:

• Conducting live rhino collaring and veterinary operations
• Working alongside monitoring and response teams
• Contributing to tracking, data, and security systems
• Helping fund and deliver the final infrastructure that locks in long-term protection

This is not conservation tourism. This is an active field operation.

No prior wildlife experience is required – only humility, curiosity, and respect for the work. by @globalprotagonists

We use the word “mission” very deliberately.

Over more than a decade in the field, our team has seen extraordinary conservation projects struggle to get off the ground - or continue - because the funding, people or resources simply weren’t there.

That gap is a big part of why Global Protagonists exists.

Before we ask “what can we do?”, we ask “what actually needs to be done?”

Then we work backwards with our partners - building missions around real conservation priorities, clear objectives and impact we can measure.

It’s a simple framework, but it sits at the heart of everything we do.

And then we bring people together around it. Each playing a real part in something much bigger than any of us could do alone. That’s what it means to be a Protagonist 🙌

When I finally arrived in South Africa, the tragic joke was that everything that could possibly have gone wrong for me… had.

Four disrupted flights. An unexpected night stranded in Kenya.

My wildfire training was rescheduled—because the rangers had been deployed to fight actual wildfires.

And the white rhino collaring I had most anticipated—helicopters, vets darting from the air, vehicles racing in, everyone working against the clock—happened while I was still stranded.

“Might there be another one I could be a part of?” I asked.

“There’s no chance, Wai-Jia. There are too many moving parts to reorganise.”

A friend, whom I’d asked to kill my last shred of hope before it tortured me further, half-joked with equal parts humor, honesty and compassion—

“You’re not important enough, Wai-Jia. But it’ll happen for you someday.”

That freezing night, shivering alone in my thatched hut, I ugly-cried.

But I also learnt a deeper surrender.

I couldn’t control my flights,
the wildfires,
the rhino collaring.

But I could control my YES.

I had come to train rangers.
Could I let that be enough?

Then, on my final evening—

“This is super last-minute—but we’re collaring a BLACK rhino tomorrow morning. It’s a rare event, even for us!

Come, Wai-Jia.

And we’ll make sure you catch your flight.”

Black rhinos are critically endangered, and elusive. But I had barely an hour in the bush before leaving for an airport several hours away.

Finding one could take hours.

Yet minutes into the drive, there it was.

The helicopter thundered.
We tore through clouds of red dust.

Suddenly, alongside the rangers I had trained, we were smashing through thorny scrub towards it.

Minutes later, as I gave an injection, the collar was secured and we raced back before it roused.

A treasured friend drove me personally so I could experience this, escape the bush—and still catch my flight.

“I wouldn’t have let you miss it for the world,” he said. “Not after everything you did.”

As we left, a mother white rhino and her calf emerged from the bush.

The perfect goodbye.

Tears dammed behind my eyes as I felt God whisper—

“You are important to Me.”

Last week we finally culminated the rescue mission of Maisha, an orphan chimpanzee of about 9 months that was held on a private home for several months after her mother was killed for bush meat purposses.
Very important to stress that chimpazees are fully protected species in Gabon and that to held orphan babies as pets is ilegal and can end up in jail sentence.
Thankyou so much to @africaunited_airlines , @fondation_lekedi_biodiversite @minef_ga (Ministere de Eaux et Foret) @conservationjustice @ebandoong for all their work to put this mission together.

Spent the night away from my babies to be there for someone else’s.

She cries when she wakes up. She needs back rubs to fall asleep. She doesn’t like the dark - the light has to stay on all night. She needs someone beside her. She feeds every two hours.

Her mum should be here for all of it.

Nova has a LOT to say… 🦏🤍🔊

One of my favourite things about caring for this little girl is discovering just how vocal baby rhinos are.

The tiny squeaks, whistles, grunts and little calls — especially when she knows her milk is coming! 🍼😂 Every sound seems to mean something different: I’m hungry, where are you, give me attention… NOW.

Rhino calves naturally use vocalisations to communicate with their mothers, so hearing Nova calling, responding to us and becoming more expressive as she grows is incredibly special.

And then there’s that tongue… 👅🦏
Apparently it needs to come out for absolutely everything. 😂

Turn the sound ON for this one. 🔊🤍

Every day, Nova gets a little stronger, a little more confident… and definitely a little louder.
