Exciting news! 🎉 The renowned Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program was recognized by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the best drama schools in the world in an article published in May 2026. The program ranked 5th in MFA programs, 8th in the United States and 12th in the world. Since its inception in 1987, it has grown into one of the most acclaimed classical training programs both within and beyond the nation. Each year, seven students are accepted into the highly competitive two-year program, which comes with free tuition and a monthly living stipend. The Old Globe is pleased to announce Romeo and Juliet, its final Shakespeare production of the year performed by students from The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program. Directed by Kat Yen (La Jolla Playhouse’s All the Men Who’ve Frightened Me, Atlantic Theater Company’s Heart Strings), the limited engagement will play ten performances only from October 31 through November 8, 2026 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre. Globe subscribers, donors, USD faculty, staff and students may purchase tickets now. The general public may purchase tickets on September 22. The streets of Verona are dangerous due to the ancient strife between the Capulets and the Montagues. From this enmity grows an innocent, pure love between two young people that can solve the rift between the two households. 7 Days of MFAs day seven - Stephanie Hinck "The expression is the ruler of the photo" is something I say a lot when it comes to portrait photography, and the same is true for an actor. The right expression with the right line read can make a character feel oh so real or like a bad cartoon. Stephanie has an amazing instinct (probably due to the extensive training of this and other programs) to time a change in expression to perfectly punctuate her lines. It's that little extra sauce that really pulls you into the moment and convinces you of a performers own belief in what they are saying/doing. 7 Days of MFAs day 6 - Shalyn Welch Movement. Dynamism. Gravitas. That'd be a few simple ways to describe how Shalyn performs. Missing from them is what is probably one of the most important qualities an actor can have that Shalyn embodies. It looks like play. "Oh that's fun for sure." Or something along those lines went through my head during the first spectacular death in red light I got to see...only to be treated to a second death in red light later in a completely different show!
