📚 Book Review 📚

Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience
✏️ Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Rating: 4/5

First, my brother recommended this book and said I’d enjoy it…he knows me so well.

Flow breaks down what it means to be truly absorbed in what we love—those moments when time disappears and we feel fully alive. He blends research and real-life examples to show how joy comes from focus, challenge, and intention, not ease.

I connected so much with the idea that we can shape our attention and, in turn, shape our experience of life. It made me rethink how I use my time and what actually brings me fulfillment.

📝 Favorite idea: “The process of discovering new goals in life is in many respects similar to that by which an artist goes about creating an original work of art.”

⚠️ Note: This is a reflective, psychology-heavy read—it’s dense! So only read if you want something thought-provoking.

To know our beauty is to study it. “The Science of Black Hair” and “Black Skin” remind us that to admire our beauty is to understand it— with wisdom, patience, and pride. 🖤

📚Book Review📚

A Love Song for Ricki Wilde
✏️ By Tia Williams

Rating: 5/5

First off, Tia Williams did a wonderful thing with this book.

We start off following the story of Ricki Wilde, a 28 year old woman who grew up in a family well-known for its thriving funeral home business. As a late in life child, Ricki never felt like she fit in with her family, especially not with her three perfect older sisters. Though she was expected to continue to work in the family funeral home business, Ricki decided to pursue her dreams of becoming a floral designer and opening her own floral shop. When the opportunity presented itself for her to do so in Harlem, Ricki could not pass up the chance. She left her life in Atlanta and pursued what many of us hope to do in this lifetime–immerse ourselves in our passions. While in Harlem, she meets Ezra Walker, a man with a weird and mysterious history that you’ll have to read the book to find out. They set off on a romantic adventure that I can characterize as wild, beautiful, tragic, and devastating all at the same time.

I connected with the main character Ricki so much–her love of beauty and what it means to create beauty in this world really resonated with me. She’s also a lover of fashion from by-gone periods. As a lover of 50s womens’ fashion myself, I felt like Ricki and I were kindred spirits. As an aside, Tia Williams has a remarkable command of words as the way she puts words together really makes you pause and rethink what you thought language could do. Here are some of my favorite phrases:

📝”the really good [songs] could rearrange the typography of your soul,” “[music] was his spiritual nourishment,” and “the world may be in shambles around us, but we’re still creating through it. We’ll always have art, love, stories, adventures, beauty[.]”

⚠️Warning⚠️: This book discusses African spiritual practices like Voodoo and Hoodoo. If you are sensitive to these topics, I recommend you not read this book.

📚 Book Review 📚

This Could Be Us &
Before I Let Go
By ✍️ Kennedy Ryan

These are the first books I read by Kennedy Ryan and I must say I am hooked on her writing style. I sped through both of these. I also had the honor to meet Ms. Ryan a few weeks ago at the Gaithersburg book festival. She is the sweetest and stood for a pic even though she was already on her way out!

Now onto my review. P.S. I forgot to include the books in the first pic, but it was such a cute one! 🤭

📝 “This Could be Us” Quick Review:

Love love love this creation! This follows Soledad Barnes, who after years of being a sharp and effective stay-at-home mom, has to re-plan her life after a major betrayal by her husband. Instead of jumping into a relationship prematurely, Soledad learns herself and takes time to learn who she is as a woman. Along the way she meets Judah, who shows her what it looks like for someone to truly care about who you are as a woman, and not what you can do for them.

📖 Favorite Quote: “[A] woman who wants more and realizes she deserves it is a dangerous thing”

******

📝 “Before I let Go” Quick Review:

This is a beautiful second-chance-at-love story following Yasmen and Josiah Wade whose marriage fell apart after life hit them in an unexpected way. I love the dual POV and as we’re brought into the minds of both characters, we get to see who they really are and how they feel about each other.

📖 Favorite Quote: “[being my own gentle observer] means seeing myself clearly—good, bad, beautiful, ugly, faults, mistakes—acknowledging what I really think and feel, and not judging those emotions. Understanding myself. Not censoring it. Having compassion for myself.”

I went to the Gaithersburg Book Festival today with the hopes of finding a new read. Fortunately, I got to see Antonia Hylton speak about her debut book, Madness, a historical non-fiction book about Crownville Hospital, a segregated asylum for the “Negro Insane.” This hospital has since closed, but still stands in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

During her discussion she reflected that our experience as Black people in the US is relevant to our mental health care. I believe this fact has been left out of a lot mental health care—the nuances of the Black experience are often overlooked in mental healthcare.

I’ve already started diving in and looking forward to knowing the hospital patients’ stories.

***Book Review***

No Reservations by Sheryl Lister

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book exemplified to me what true true female friendship is, what a true sisterhood is–and I absolutely love that.

The book follows the journeys of three women–Joy, Diane, and Rochelle–after the death of their dear friend Yvette. Yvette was the rock of the quartet and after she lost a battle to cancer, the women had to navigate their world without her. Yvette did leave each of the women with words of wisdom so to speak. She left each of her friends with directives that they should embark on after she’s no longer in this world. She told one to pursue her business dreams, another to give a man a chance after another man broke her heart, and to the last friend, she instructed not to give up her dreams of becoming a mother. These marching orders anchored the decisions of each of these women.

I love the depiction of female friendships in a world where backstabbing in the media is so marketable; this book was a breath of fresh air. These girls were “there for each other” in every sense of that phrase. Now I know what to look for in friendships and what it means to be a true friend.

While I love the female friendships, the romantic relationships were either superficial or absolutely horrid.

Despite that, please give this book a read if you’d like to see what real girlfriends look like.

Happy reading!
