The Great Mosque of Gaza

The Omari Mosque did not start out as a mosque. In fact, it is said to have changed its religion 6 times since its inception.

The mosque on that ground has been torn down and rebuilt several times since its 7th century inception. Although they used the same ground and the same stone to rebuild it.

Its most recent destruction was due to the air raids perpetrated by Israel in early December 2023, and funded by American tax dollars.

I recently built the ruins out of a book called the American City for my 3-D art class and thought I’d share it with y’all.

Loosing this architectural wonder with its rich history and its witness of years of devotion is nothing short of devastating but it is also a beautiful reminder that nothing isn’t broken that can’t be fixed or rebuilt.

It’s the embodiment of hope not just for an empty husk of a building but also for the people that remember its wholeness.
