Microlocs can be started in a number of ways:
1. Braids
2. Two strand twists (the quickest but not suitable for all textures) for people with low density this creates a fuller look especially when washing
3. Comb coils (🚫I personally don’t recommend)
4. Interlocking (the OG)

😀Let’s focus on interlocking. It is the oldest method of starting micro locs and can be the most time consuming. The trick is to find your groove and have a lot of patience!

Interlocking can be done using a few different rotations. I like to use either the 3 point rotation or the 4 point rotation for a tighter loc.

How to: 📝 four point rotation

Think of a ⏰ clock. I focus on 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00.

1. Blow dry the hair (trust me it makes it so much easier to work with
2. Section out the appropriate size of the loc
3. Slightly back comb the end of the section so the loc doesn’t unravel when you begin
4. Start at any time (12,3,6, or 9)
5. Let’s imagine starting at 12:00…. using your right hand, Place your fingers (I use my thumb and index finger) between the hair strands to open it up and loop the back combed part through the loc
6. Next place your hand at 3:00 and repeat step 5
7. Place your hand at 6:00 and repeat step 5
8. Lastly place your hand at 9:00 (I like to use my left hand for 9:00) and repeat step 5

When there is no more room for your hands to fit use a crochet hook or interlocking tools to repeat the rotations. Remember to end the last rotation in the direction you want the hair to lay. (If you want the hair to lay down to the ground end at 12:00)

Yes, we know…. Two strand twist lasts a long time but stop being boring switch it up and live a little.

Method of curling the locs: perm rods

Let the curls drop naturally or stretch them before you leave! Either way you’re still cute!

Would you still call this a retwist appointment?

He called asking for a retwist and casually left out one little detail: he hadn’t had his locs serviced since his birthday last year.

No judgment — but this is exactly why regular loc maintenance matters. When new growth sits too long, locs can start marrying together and matting at the roots. taken in Taunton, Massachusetts by @gloshouse

What’s the earliest hair appointment you’ve ever booked?

5 AM appointments sound crazy…

Until you realize you can skip the after-work traffic, avoid spending your entire Saturday in a salon chair, and head straight to the gym, home, or wherever your day takes you.

My client started her day with a fresh wash, retwist, and style before most people even hit snooze.

Sometimes convenience is the real luxury. ✨

Would you ever book a 5 AM appointment, or are you waiting until the sun comes up? 👇 taken in Taunton, Massachusetts by @gloshouse

🚨 LOC’D MAMAS, DON’T PANIC.

If you’ve recently had a baby and noticed your locs looking thinner around your hairline, temples, or crown, you’re not alone.

What you’re experiencing may be postpartum alopecia, also known as postpartum hair shedding.

During pregnancy, high estrogen levels keep many hairs in the growth phase longer than usual. That’s why many women notice their hair feels thicker and fuller while pregnant.

After delivery, estrogen levels drop rapidly.

As a result, many of those hairs enter the shedding phase at the same time.

This usually begins about 2 to 5 months after giving birth and can continue for several months.

For women with locs, this can be especially alarming because:

• Your locs may suddenly feel thinner.
• The scalp may become more visible.
• Edges and temples may appear sparse.
• Retwists may not look as full as they once did.

Here’s the part many people don’t know:

👉 In most cases, postpartum hair loss is temporary.

Many women begin seeing regrowth within 6 to 12 months postpartum, although full density can take longer depending on genetics, nutrition, stress levels, hormones, and overall health.

Can it be prevented?

Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to stop postpartum shedding because it is driven by hormonal changes.

However, some things may support healthy regrowth:

✔ Adequate protein intake
✔ Iron and vitamin level assessment if recommended by your healthcare provider
✔ Stress management
✔ Gentle loc maintenance
✔ Avoiding excessive tension from styles
✔ Scalp care and overall health

What usually DOESN’T help:

❌ Tight styles to “hide” thinning
❌ Over-retwisting
❌ Products claiming to completely stop hormonal shedding

If your shedding is severe, continues beyond a year postpartum, or you’re noticing bald patches, it’s important to consult a dermatologist or healthcare provider to rule out other causes.

Tag a loc’d mama who needs to hear this.

Save this post so you remember: postpartum shedding is common, temporary for many women, and does not mean your loc journey is over. ❤️

When starting locs, your parting pattern becomes the foundation for:
• future styles
• fullness
• scalp visibility
• sizing consistency
• maintenance
• and overall versatility

Send this to a friend thinking of starting their loc journey 🥰

Different parting styles create different results 👇🏾

✨ Brick Pattern
The most common grid-style pattern.
Gives a fuller look because the parts are staggered instead of lining straight up. Great for versatility and hiding scalp.

✨ C-Shaped Parts
Creates a softer, more natural look. Perfect for clients who don’t want their scalp showing too much and love volume.

✨ Diamond Parts
For the girls that want luxury DETAIL 😮‍💨
Makes styling look super intricate and elevated. Beautiful for updos, petals, barrels & creative styling.

✨ Triangle Parts
Popular for a more freeform-inspired aesthetic. Gives fullness and movement while keeping individuality in the locs.

✨ Traditional Box Parts
Clean. Classic. Structured.
Best for clients who love a neat, uniform look and easier maintenance.

At the end of the day, the “best” parting pattern depends on:
✔️ your density
✔️ styling goals
✔️ desired fullness
✔️ maintenance habits
✔️ and your overall loc vision

A good loctician isn’t just doing hair.
They’re planning your loc journey YEARS ahead. 🖤

Let me save you some time 👏🏾

A tight style is not always a healthy style.

Social media got everybody chasing the ‘crispy retwist’ look while ignoring what actually matters:
✔️ scalp health
✔️ tension management
✔️ clean foundations
✔️ and long-term loc integrity

Your locs are supposed to have movement.
Your scalp is not supposed to feel like it’s fighting for survival 😭

One thing about healthy locs:
they require BALANCE.

Too much tension, too much styling, too many retwists back-to-back… that’s where thinning starts sneaking in.

The goal isn’t just a fire style for today.
The goal is healthy beautiful locs YEARS from now.

That’s why I focus on:
• intentional parting
• tension control
• scalp-friendly styling
• and creating looks that still prioritize the health of your crown 👑

Pretty is cool. Healthy is luxury.
