Kinnder — You Like Me
Sine Reader EP
Sifted Recordings
12” / Canada / 2004

Selected by @primopreems

“I love this track because it has this machiney, repetitive feel, but slowly starts adding more haunting elements - stripping back down, so to speak, before building into this haunting pad and almost unexpected piano at the end.

It gives the track a wistfulness and pathos that makes me feel like I’m floating above a foggy beach in someone else’s memory. I love the tune, and the deep, jaunty emo feeling it brings to the dancefloor.”

Primo Pitino began DJing after returning to San Francisco from New York in 2002, first establishing himself through Oldies Night, a Mission District party centered around soul, doo-wop and R&B. An introduction to Italo disco and electro through I-F’s influential “Mixed Up in The Hague” expanded his world toward trance, acid and house. His years in San Francisco culminated in Club Lonely, the high-energy party and label he ran alongside Vin Sol, Jeremy Castillo and Tiffany McColl, where ghetto house, garage, Italo and contemporary club music shared the same space.

Now based in New York, Primo’s sound moves through heavy, entrancing obscurities, euphoric pop, and moments of gothy electro and tech disco. As a teenager in the ’90s, too anxious to make it to raves, he found much of this energy alone in his room, making tapes from college radio. His sets continue that early discovery - bringing the sounds he once experienced alone into the collective space of the dance floor.

⚪️ WET LOOK 002 / breakcheck ⚪️

Shake — Arise
…Waiting For Russell
Frictional Recordings — FRCT 008
12” / US / 1998

“A record that is near and dear to my heart is the “...Waiting for Russell” EP by Anthony ‘shake’ Shakir. Actually I had to go look up the name of the EP, since for me this one has always been all about “Arise” (though “Stereotype” certainly deserves a nod as well). And that’s because Arise is a quintessential example of a near perfect techno track. Shake magically transforms a legendary Steve Gadd drum solo from the title track on Steely Dan’s Aja, layering that famous fill with shimmering synth arpeggios and a pounding 909 backbeat to produce a breathtaking detroit techno masterpiece. Arranged brilliantly into a familiar yet tactical suspense building cycle of fluttering intro/breakdown builds that release once and again into the driving backbeat, it’s the sort of 8 minute dancefloor weapon that you just don’t get tired of. What a fucking track!”

breakcheck is a Montreal based producer/DJ. As a producer, her output spans from breakbeat to house, minimal techno and beyond. As a DJ, she is a vinyl forward weaver of chaos, known for long winding journeys through the depths of her crates that keep dancers on their toes. And as a capital G Good music curator, her goal first and foremost is to put beautiful tunes in the minds and bodies of a hungry audience.

⚪️ WET LOOK 001 / ZDBT ⚪️

For the first edition of WET LOOK, ZDBT pulls one from the collection:

16 Bit Lolitas — Helen Savage (Original)
Deep Focus — DFC 013
12” / EP / UK / 2005

Newly landed in Montréal after years in Vancouver’s underground, ZDBT is the moniker of producer, DJ and live performer Zachary David Boynton Treble.

Founder of Disguise Records, member of Lemurian Time Warriors, one half of DOSIS, formerly one half of 1800HaightStreet, and the mind behind Phost, his various projects move through different corners of a deep and continually expanding musical vocabulary.

Across them, house, techno and leftfield electronics take shifting forms - informed by their histories without being bound by them. His productions have appeared on Ghostly, In Real Life, Delicate Records, Specials Worldwide, ISLA and NAFF, with recent releases alongside Syd Woz on Short Span Records and as DOSIS on Amelia Holt’s Honey Trap.

Behind the decks, years of collecting come into focus through strange connections, overlooked records and selections that can be difficult to place but easy to remember.

ZDBT joins us for GLOSS 003, marking his first appearance in Montréal since making the city his new home. by @gloss______
