Does the American blues have a close relative living in North Africa today?

Gnawa suggest it does, as they share a very similar common root. The music of the West African Sahel has left a huge legacy on the world, travelling west to the Americas and north into the Maghreb, and developing into their own unique forms over hundreds of years.

'Devil Got My Woman' is the best example of the haunting sound of Skip James' music. Weird tuning, unusual timing, and eerie lyrics - all make Skip James' music mesmerising and unsettling.

This is quite tricky to play so I hope I did it justice 🎸

Stopped off here after a long cycle and sang one of my favourite medieval songs - 'Alysoun', a poem in Middle English from around the year 1300.

Lots of musicians have set this poem to their own music, but my favourite version is by John Fleagle, so this is his melody. Check out his album 'World's Bliss' for more achingly beautiful medieval renditions.
