After my Fujifilm X100V broke down on the very first day of my summer holiday in Portugal, I wasn’t sure when we’d be reunited. Nearly two months later, after a long journey to Hong Kong for repairs, my faithful companion is finally back where it belongs: on the streets of Macau. Yesterday and today felt like a reunion. These frames are a reminder of why I love street photography, the unexpected moments, quiet stories, and fleeting details that make every walk worthwhile. Welcome back, old friend.

A shaft of afternoon light cuts across a Macau façade, turning an ordinary corner into a fleeting poem of contrasts. A ladder reaches upward, carrying a worker and a red bucket toward an unseen task, while below, an umbrella gathers a pocket of shadow around a solitary figure and a glowing screen. Their worlds never touch, yet for an instant they share the same geometry of light, silence and chance. In the theatre of the street, coincidence becomes narrative, and the city quietly reveals its hidden rhythms.

Between Macau and Hengqin, the streets tell a story beyond borders. In black and white, distractions fade away, revealing the rhythm of everyday life through light, shadow, and human presence. These images explore a space suspended between tradition and transformation, where two cities meet and every frame becomes a quiet dialogue.

Macau in black and white. A city of contrasts, where light carves stories into stone and shadows reveal what colour often hides. Walking the streets with my old Fujifilm X10, I found quiet moments between movement and stillness, architecture and people, presence and absence. Sometimes the oldest camera in the bag is all you need to see the city differently.

These photos explore a side of Macau that often escapes attention. In black and white, light and shadow become the main characters, transforming everyday moments into visual narratives filled with ambiguity and atmosphere.

A passerby framed beside a shadow, a solitary silhouette emerging against a tiled wall, and a bright umbrella cutting through darkness. These are the fleeting scenes that make street photography so compelling. By stripping away colour, the eye is drawn to gesture, contrast, and composition, revealing the quiet drama hidden in the rhythm of Macau’s streets.

Brazil is more than a nation; it is a cultural cadence, shaped by diversity and carried through generations by the enduring spirit of samba.

As the country stands at a defining moment, the choice extends beyond politics or personalities. It is a choice between democracy and tyranny, between the chorus of many voices and the command of one.

Like samba, democracy draws its strength from plurality, dialogue, and collective expression. Its beauty lies not in unanimity, but in harmony.

May the rhythm of freedom endure.

In Macau’s Senado Square, a student in a white school uniform moves purposefully through the crowd beneath a striking canopy of Chinese national flags installed for the National Day Golden Week celebrations. The bright uniform immediately draws the eye, standing apart from the sea of red overhead and the ornate festive decorations lining the square. Framed by the iconic wave-patterned pavement and the flow of visitors, the photograph captures a fleeting moment where youthful energy intersects with the visual spectacle of one of Macau’s busiest public spaces.

The Portuguese School of Macau is looking to the future without losing its identity. In his first interviews since taking office, João Miguel Gonçalves highlighted three key priorities: greater use of artificial intelligence to support learning, stronger leadership development from the earliest school years, and reinforcing the school’s role as a bridge between Portuguese and Chinese cultures. With enrolment already at full capacity, the challenge now is to keep raising educational standards while preserving the Portuguese language and culture at the heart of the school’s mission. These black-and-white frames from Macau’s streets capture the quiet theatre of everyday life. Between improvised shelters, neighbourhood storefronts, and fleeting glances through narrow spaces, the city reveals itself in moments that often go unnoticed. In monochrome, distractions fade away, leaving only light, texture, and the enduring rhythm of the streets.
