🧡Thankful - Part 1/2: In 1996, my father Otari Kobalia immigrated to Canada with his family - my mother, sister and I - for a dream of a better life. We left our home and all our belongings in Sokhumi, Georgia after civil war broke out in our little Black Sea paradise. My father was a mathematics professor at the University back home, and practiced karate, yoga and meditation. His lifestyle led him to become a vegetarian - something close to insanity in little traditional Georgia of the 70's. It was always an adventure to be around him. He is always full of jokes, laughter and warmth. He gave us confidence and belief in ourselves and the power of goodness in the world.
After the war we lived in Moscow for several years, saving up money to immigrate to Canada. I remember him telling me when I was already an adult that we could've stayed and become wealthy as many have in the chaos of the 90's but he would also no longer be the father that we knew. Many wouldn't understand this choice but I'm glad of it. I always remember his quote "It's better to lose with good, than win with bad".

When we arrived in Canada he started working on setting up a new business where he could put to use his creativity and innovation. I remember the first bakery he painted a large yellow submarine on the wall and the back room was an office, that at some point sheltered another immigrant who didn't have a home. It was a kooky place to say the least.
The bakery worked well but without its problems and my father’s dream to have a place that adhered to his values grew stronger. In 2010 he sold the bakery and opened Glutenull. Our little Vegan, Gluten Free and Non-GMO bakery that could now be a reflection of his values, beliefs and passions. (2/2 Continued in comments)
