Dry skin and dehydrated skin may look similar, but they aren’t the same and treating them the same can leave your client spinning their wheels.

The difference matters because each one calls for a different approach. Understanding what’s happening beneath the surface helps you choose products and treatments that truly support your client’s skin instead of masking the symptoms.

Dry skin completely lacks shine. Look for rough or flaky areas, sensitivity, tightness, fine lines and potentially skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Dehydrated skin still feels tight, but may have shine or breakouts in the T-zone. Clients often say their moisturizer has “stopped working” or that their skin feels tight again shortly after application.
