My brother, being 9 years older than me, was old enough to watch the first moon landing on TV.. But by 1971, the year I was born, Apollo 17 was the final crewed mission to the moon. Commander Gene Cernan being the last man to set foot on the lunar surface.
I saw Star Wars when I was 7, but in terms of more ā€˜hard sci-fi’, I didn’t get to see 2001 A Space Odyssey until I was about 10, and even though I only saw it on TV, it still blew my little mind. But even before that I had an interest in all things ā€˜Space’ thanks to my brother. He’d made models of the Saturn V rocket, as well as the Eagle Lunar lander, and a cratered moonscape he’d fashioned out of plaster and painted grey, for it to sit on. He also had a load of the Major Matt Mason toys when he was a kid, thankfully this time they were kept and then handed down to me.

And it’s easy to see now, how all this stuff has gone in over the years… a lifetime of influences and inspiration.

So it feels a bit like tonight marks a kind of full circle moment, as the Artemis II crew takes off towards the moon. I wish my brother was here to see it and to witness how mad the whole Project Hail Mary thing has been.

Slides here include concept art for the PHM EVA suit, and an earlier version of the helmet, stuff from the 2019 Kubrick exhibition, Dave Bowman’s helmet from 2001, Danny’s homemade Apollo 11 sweater from The Shining, a little portrait I did of the Artemis astronaut Christina Koch, me when I lived with @hewll circa 94, making him a Saturn V rocket (why am I wearing sunglasses?!)… a beautiful drawing of Valentina Tereshkova by good friend @pjbond ….and a few dope photos of Artemis astronauts snatched from the internet over the last few days.

Godspeed Artemis II

Poyekhali!

I’m seeing that this fox cardigan is getting a bit of love online…. Which I fully understand because when I first clapped eyes on the wolf version, at the Mildmay Vintage Fayre, back in April 2024, I fell in love with it too! I immediately sent a photo of it to Dave (Crossman, Co-Costume Designer)… He (rightly) questioned whether the wolf design was maybe a bit too aggressive for a school teacher… So I decided to just buy it for myself. We already had two Mary Maxim* cardigans in our house and I was chuffed to be getting a new one in such good condition.
…But that afternoon was also our first fitting with Ryan... and when he saw it he fell in love with it too. The directors Phil and Chris, the producers, everyone loved it... So we camera tested it, as the first shoot day was fast approaching and repeats had to be made. Then just a week or so out from filming Ryan came in with an unexpected suggestion… He’d been staying in London and had experienced sightings of our urban fox population… a lot of Londoners consider them pests, but I’m more inclined to agree with Ryan, they’re special, and it’s always a bit magical when you spot one crossing your path at night. So he asked if we could change the wolves to foxes. We were extremely tight on time but this was also a chance to change the faces, and the blood red footprints, Dave’s initial instinct was right… so... with everyone in agreement, new coloured yarn was ordered, I re-jigged the faces to make them fox-like and more friendly… and then our incredible knitters had to just go like the clappers.

It all came good in the end and I’m chuffed it’s getting all the love. If you haven’t seen the film yet, this one is really worth seeing on the biggest screen possible. All depts really nailed it and it all looks beautiful. #projecthailmary #CostumeDesignbyDavidCrossmanAndGlynDillon #gocosplayersgo

*Note - I used to refer to them as Cowichan cardigans until I was educated by a Canadian friend. Of course genuine Cowichan sweaters are only made by the Salish people of southeastern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This wolf one is from a 1950s Mary Maxim pattern. by @glyn__dillon

I’m not sure of the dates exactly, but I think you’re fast running out of time to see #projecthailmary in the cinema. It’s definitely a film you’ll regret not seeing on the big screen.

Ryan as Grace, and James Ortiz as Rocky are rightly getting all the plaudits but I’m happy to see the incredible Sandra Hüller is also getting all the praise she deserves.

I think she’s a certified genius, I love the choices she made… She really found a Stratt that wasn’t on the page.

…And on top of all that genius talent, she was an absolute pleasure to work with.

I can’t wait to see her in Digger.
