These reads took my mind off the bruising after my 2nd hip replacement.‘The Ayatollah’s Gaze (2025) by Majid Parsa.Under Sharia Law hiding in plain site is the only way to survive for this gay man in Iran. Majid’s book is a joy of truth in a shit storm World. And, what a clever title! @majidparsa.author‘Devout’ (2026) by David Archuleta.More religion, this time The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, getting in the way of living an authentic life. Well David has had enough of being told who he should be. This memoir leads us through the abuse and turmoil that plagued his young life, and how he navigated the expectations everyone around him. Like so many runners up on American Idol, David went on to overshadow most winners. And now he has the strength to lead his own life his way. And he’s added writing to his talents @davidarchie‘The Sunflower Boys: A Novel’ (2025) Sam Wachman.A modern day war novel set in Ukraine. It’s all here love, loss and fighting to survive alone with his younger brother after Putin’s winter bombs kill his mother and grandfather. Will Artem’s father return from American to take care of him and his bother? Will his feelings for best friend Viktor be enough to see him through. I’m not saying! Loved this! @sam.wachman‘A Room In Chelsea Square’ (reprinted 2014) by Michael Nelson – First published the year I was born, 1958. Thought to be so shocking at the time is was published ‘anonymously’. Not shocking today of course but it is a fab read and as the back cover notes “Classic High Camp”. @valancourtbooksTrying to avoid Amazon and anything Jeff Bezos? If you can’t easily get to a local bookshop why not try blackwells.co.uk – all orders are postage free. @blackwellbooksSipping into Spring with Barra Gin from Scotland. I first tasted this on its ownsome. The thing I noticed first was how sweet it is. The locally sourced Carrageen seaweed also adds a unique Scottish flavour. At 46% alc it has mucho grunt (midway between 'Gordons' at 37.5% and 'Plymouth Navy Strength' at 57%.). This is bleddy 'ansome juniper juice and makes a delish Martini ( or a superior Gin & Soda) Slàinte Mhath. @isleofbarradistillers by @glynnpw

'Dirty Business' - Drama on 4 Now.The working title for new Channel 4 drama ‘Dirty Business’ was ‘Isle of Shite’. The three-part series, which airs on consecutive nights from 23-25 February, charts the real stories of the pollution of England’s waterways since the water companies were privatised in 1989.Based on the true story of amateur sleuths appalled at the dumping of sewage in our rivers, this drama starring David Thewlis and Jason Watkins is a blast of controlled fury – and could become the next ‘Mr Bates vs the Post Office’.It also features the stories of the victims of what has the potential to be one of the biggest corporate scandals in the country’s history.Heather Preen died aged eight years old, just two weeks after contracting the most aggressive strain of E. coli during a family beach holiday in Dawlish, Devon. The recent rainy reads;“A Mind Of My Own” by Kathy Burke - A perfect combination of strength and real wokeness, swearing and fun, fine acting (and directing and writing) and some epic dish!“This Time For Me” by Alexandra Billings - Her fantastic voice guides us through the best and the worst of times, and she comes out the other side head held high saying ’come on then humans’.“On The Boardwalk” by Martin Sherman – He’s always had the strength to expose truth. Thankfully he never accepts requests to abridge a story to make others feel more comfortable. Terrific. “I’m Still Here: My 90 Years” by Amanda Barrie – Feisty or what? So much more than Alma. She’s the Nemesis of the bullies. When she punched Gordon Ramsay I cheered.And the 4 o’clock sundowner sip - Santa Ana Florale Gin.Gin for those who enjoy a classic dry taste but with the added fragrance of Ylang Ylang. Plus Calamansi, Alpinia and Dalandan Citrus (whatever they are). So gorgeous you could dab this one behind your ears!
