This Saturday: Join us at the museum for ‘Punk University,’ a panel discussion about the life skills one acquires through participating in an underground scene. With Kat Sirdofsky (Rebel Records), Ruben Hickman (XCNTRCX) and Adam Carson (AFI). Moderated by the guy taking a smoke break in excellent pants, lower left. Only a handful of tickets left! One of the most impressive people I’ve ever met is @gmeline, who happens to be my former editor at the @northbaybohemian and @kqedarts. For the July issue of @marinmagazine, I interviewed the #santarosa-bred musician and senior arts & culture editor about “Disturbing the Peace,” a singular new exhibit he curated that explores the Sonoma County #punkrock scene of which he’s been an active part for decades.

See the profile link for a Q & A and rare set of photos from the @dead__kennedys’ classic 1985 show in @visit_novato. Then watch the video of Gabe’s behind-the-scenes tour (above). Learn about legendary #northbay shows by @greenday, @clubdevo, @ramones, @sublime, @operationivy89, @blackflagband and more. A pleasant revelation is that most local “zines” were women-produced, a trend that accelerated when the #riotgrrrl scene grew and @theebikinikill @mskathleenhanna played a backyard show in town.

The experiential exhibit only runs through August at the @museumsc. So don’t miss this completely unique, important event — and a chance to witness an exciting new creative arena for local renaissance man Gabe Meline. Henry Rollins @henryandheidi has been doing spoken word for decades, but how cool would it have been to see one of his first shows?

END OF AN ERA: Comstock closed for good today. Stopped by right at the final bell, last day ever. Originally opened in 1972 (!), it’s gotten shut down by the district.

I’ve been feeling oddly grateful that I got to go to Comstock in the ‘80s. I was just 10 when I started 7th grade there. It kicked my ass and gave me empathy for people’s differences. Like any junior high experience, it sucked, but maybe I needed it.

Lots of memories here: School dances in the gym, 25¢ bread rolls at the snack line, airband contests in the quad, volunteering in library groups, endless military drills in marching band, running in P.E., pranking Brent Farris that one time, learning Shakespeare, hating algebra, cutting History class, ending the pledge of allegiance with “…and justice for those who can afford it,” designing skate ramps in mechanical drawing, making videos in English class, watching step team rehearsals, shoving folded-up love notes in lockers. Getting beaten up, a lot. Bus rides. Mixtapes. Field trips. Counselors. Cliques.

The last song they played at our 9th grade dance was “Forever Young” by Alphaville. And then I was really, really relieved to get the hell out of there.

Anyway. From my perspective, Comstock got hollowed out by terrible policy / latent racism / interdistrict transfers, and I hope these kids adapt and get a better education at nearby schools.

Punk was never just about music. It was about expression, community, rebellion, and creating something of your own. 🎸

In this conversation, guest curator Gabe Meline — Arts & Culture Editor at KQED — reflects on the Sonoma County punk scene that helped shape this exhibition, from legendary Green Day shows to the women creating zines in the ‘90s and the DIY culture that gave so many people a voice.

Many of the pieces featured in DISTURBING THE PEACE come directly from Gabe and his friends’ personal collections, including vintage shirts, instruments, flyers, and original zines from the era.

He also shares why punk’s message of self-expression still matters today, maybe now more than ever.
