film, sound & objects

What begins to grow where repression prevails? This question echoes through Rosa Luxemburg's herbarium - a practice she began in 1913 and carried, unbroken, through 1918, sustained even behind the walls of the various prisons that confined her. In a space built on separation, control, and silence, Luxemburg tended, through these plants, a form of connection that persisted despite her captivity. Her herbarium remains a radical act of attention, a seemingly silent poetics of interconnectedness, taking root under harsh conditions.

A set up of film, objects and sound engages with the resonance of Luxemburg´s herbarium, dealing with it not only as a historical document, created at a time marked by militarisation and rising nationalism, but as a practice of resistance, developed together with friends, who gifted these plants during her imprisonments, to stay connected with the outside world.

At a time when right-wing populist parties are gaining influence worldwide and again - especially in Germany, the artists want to focus on forces of resistance. These images may be less representative, yet they speak to something about our society, while unsettling categories of the useful. Plants and organisms become collaborators, telling stories of other orders, of remnants and of a collective ground to grow.

EVAMARIA MÜLLER & THOMAS CATLAW:
COMPOST X
August 2026

Compost X is a collaborative sound work built across two years and two continents, Arizona's Sonoran Desert and Vienna, by sound artists Thomas Catlaw and Evamaria Müller. Beginning as an exchange of field recordings passed back and forth by email, the project evolved into a practice the pair call "composting".

Akin to making a physical compost heap, the artists learned to recover, reuse, and repurpose discarded or forgotten fragments from their sound archives and texts from their unfolding correspondence to create new, unexpected, and vibrant sonic worlds. Each new layer of sound arrived to the other already in relationship with what came before — breaking down, reacting, and remaking the emerging piece into something neither artist anticipated.

The result is four soundscapes (along with a fifth piece, called “+ one,” built from the artists' own correspondence and voices), alongside a long-form essay that both reflects on and enacts composting as an artistic method and an ethical practice of listening- and creating-with others.

➡ Listen to the work on afm.org.nz, and explore the textual manifestation of Müller and Catlaw’s collaboration on Soundbleed, AF's online journal for critical writing around sound in Aotearoa.

Thomas Catlaw is a sound artist and field recordist based in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. His practice centers on transforming, layering, and (re)assembling field recordings into soundscapes that traverse the border between documentation and fabrication.

Evamaria Müller is a sound artist based in Vienna. Her soundscapes continuously explore new compositional approaches to examine the complex composition of (and our relationship to) our environment through field recording and sound experiments.

This has been in the making for a while. recordings from many different places I visited over the last years made it onto the EP. I'm grateful for all the different creatures I met on the way.
I would have never thought that the recordings I made when I forgot my stereobar and used my head instead (last pic) would make it on a release - but I'm happy they did. by @gmorrk

David Wallraf (DE)

Our special guest from Hamburg is a non-binary noise artist, researcher and theorist. When we first heard and met David playing live in Vienna last year, we knew that this was the beginning of an ongoing admiration. A few months later we're happy to invite David back to Vienna while they're on a small tour. The delicate noise walls and rumbling beats of David Wallraf's live performance will invite you to think about everything you heard in your live so far and you're invited to share whatever came to your mind in Koje's intimate atmosphere after the show.

PRESENTATION RE:FEEL IT - RAUMRESIDENZ

IN PASSING

IN PASSING

Opening: Friday, April 17, 6–9 p.m.
Water tank-room Semmelweisklinik

“in passing” is a sound machine—a train that winds its way through found objects, making them resonate with every touch in a mix of friction, resonance, and the echo of the space. The water tank-room becomes an acoustic laboratory; each journey creates a new, fleeting composition. by @gmorrk
