While the main attraction is the indigo bunting, this common yellowthroat put on quite a show at the sunflower fields.
He definitely deserved all the attention he got from us lucky visitors.

I've been seeing so many gorgeous photos of Indigo Buntings on sunflowers that I couldn't pass up the chance to try for one myself this weekend.

Of course, that meant prying myself out of a cozy bed, chugging a bucket of coffee, and hitting the road at o'dark thirty. 🙄

After what felt like hours of standing at attention, I finally spotted that brilliant blue among the yellow blooms and fired off a burst. Heart racing, hands shaking, I zoomed in on the back of the camera...

It should be illegal to wear indigo-blue hats in sunflower fields. 😱

Fortunately, a real Indigo Bunting gave me another chance later. by @gnblock

I willingly got out of bed before sunrise, which should tell you how much I wanted to see the Assateague horses. That alone deserves some sort of award.

Nature, as usual, had other ideas.

Before reaching Assateague, we made an unexpected stop at a small island alive with pelicans, egrets, herons, and gulls. Then it was on to the horses. Turns out, when you're with a boat captain who knows the area, "on the way" can be just as exciting as the destination

Many thanks to Captain Chris Pino for a great morning on the water. If you're looking for a unique way to experience Assateague, I highly recommend a trip with him.
