I won this Society of Professional Journalists award last year, for a piece I wrote the year before, and I’m just now getting the physical award… and I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m still excited about it. Thank you to @southseattleemerald for letting me write “Debunking the Myth of Police Defunding” when legacy media was bending over backwards to push defunding narratives🙏🏾 by @gncordova

I loved getting to have this conversation with the profound and effervescent @deardeerya for @thestrangerseattle 🎶 a perfect blending of many intersecting topics that I care deeply about. Adeerya’s powerful exhibit Never Turn Back: Echoes of African American Music is open at @mopopseattle now through next year.(Photo by @deardeerya) by @gncordova

I was born shortly after midnight, in Seattle, on June 21st. Which means I’m still a Gemini. I always have to argue with people about this which is nonsensical because I’m the most Gemini of all the Geminis.Anyways, I started off my birthday year traipsing around Paris and Barcelona, as you might expect. And then I came home and we moved into a place with more space. And then I proceeded to spend essentially the entirety of the past year with a house full of people, especially children. Because apparently I’m the kind of person now who has allowed myself to put down roots, and do things like host Sunday dinner and coordinate playdates. Which, of course, makes me laugh because… who’d have thought? Who am I? What is this life? Really makes you wonder what’s coming next. (I tried making a birthday dump for multiple days, and every version ended up just being different posts of the kids.) by @gncordova

As Rainier Beach High School students get ready to walk across the stage and collect their diplomas, family and friends can't help but feel the void left by the two students shot and killed at a nearby bust stop earlier this year. A few random things that made me smile this May:1. @kimberlecrenshaw’s new book Backtalker and getting to take home this @mundo__flowers arrangement 2. My big-haired Auntie Sha pulling up on me3. My Auntie Tita showing me that I signed letters “Peace Outy” at 6 years old (90s baby, for real)4. Aaron cheesing getting dropped off for a date5. Inquisitive Ashton randomly in the kitchen of a boba tea spot seeing how they make the ube boba 6. A sweet note from Tori’s adorable mom after TF107. A new, once-every-couple-of-years selfie with @cheziktsu 8. My love always supporting everything I have going on9. The trees outside of our house in full bloom, blocking the power lines10. @llamamama_’s “intimate little” Begin Again dinner11. Porter perfecting his short ribs by @gncordova

I received an advance copy of @marabrockakil’s debut novel and it’s right on time because I’ve promised myself I was gonna get back into fiction—and take a little break from books about war, policy, history that sends me into a rage, etc. by @gncordova

At SIFF’s closing night last night, it was announced that our proposal has been awarded a PBS Cascade grant to produce a new docuseries, which will air in early 2027, about the history of Black people in the Pacific Northwest (and Seattle in particular) through the lens of Black music.Directed by @cheziktsu and produced by Porter and me, this deeply personal project will also explore the policies and practices that created the Central District, and the immense (and often overlooked) cultural and artistic output that grew from it. by @gncordova

Yesterday was so special! I covered the Black Panther Park ribbon cutting ceremony for the @southseattleemerald. If you’ve been following @nyema8’s work over the years, then you already know how much time, energy and care she’s put into reclaiming space and uplifting our history and culture. It’s been an honor to witness it. Link in my stories. by @gncordova

Early morning hang out by the 🌊 In February alone, I got to see all of my siblings’ kids. That feels like such a blessing. It’s funny how I’ve always known I didn’t want kids, and I’ve never considered myself maternal, but I’m still so immensely grateful to my brothers and sister, Porter, my cousins, my aunts and uncles, for giving me all these babies to love. by @gncordova
