Bridging the Gap brings you BITE SIZE ADVICE!!

I’m going to be asking all kinds of folks in the cycling industry for their bite-size bike advice this month. I can’t wait to share with you what I learn!

First up: Matty B at @gncycleski with why you should get a bike fit!

I got a bike fit with Matty this spring and can honestly say it’s made such a difference in my cycling this summer. Comfort is key!

If you can’t get to Whitefish, I’ve heard great things about the bike fits at @endurancephysio in Missoula! taken in Great Northern Cycle & Ski by @gncycleski

Smoke finally cleared and we’re celebrating with an absolute fire sale.

Buy a bike off the floor, take a pair of skis home. Not complicated. Not a drill. Now till the end of August!!

Sometimes you know exactly what you have before it’s gone.

Sophie the Dog was that way.

We knew we had a passionate little beastie. From screeching at trailheads to obnoxious barking when requesting a frisbee throw to annoyingly squeaking at the shop when we were talking to customers, she knew how to communicate exactly what was on her heart. Which was most commonly, “pay attention to me” or “it’s time to go”.

We knew we had a dog with character and opinions. While Sophie was highly food motivated - so much so that she would walk herself to Tailwaggers soliciting treats, we also saw her turn her nose at more of those treats that you would think, never quite understanding why some were worth it and others didn’t make the cut. Sophie loved fresh carrots and broccoli but not peas or cucumbers. She was so enthralled with carrots that the sound of chopping them was enough for her to come running. On occasion, I would chop a yam and she would mistake it for a carrot. Her belief so strong that she wouldn’t take my explanation that were different orange vegetables. When finally gifted a sliver, the yam always ended as a chewed mash left on the floor.

We knew we were housing a creature of true comfort. Sophs was always game for an activity, but there’s little she loved more than all her people on the couch or in the bed. So much so that when dinner would linger around the table before retiring to the couch, it would inevitably be interrupted by high pitched communication requesting the dishes to be cleared and the feet to be put up. When camping, a hang out past 8pm was met with squeaking until she was tucked into her bed in the van and told she was allowed to go to sleep while the grown ups stayed up a bit longer.

We knew we had a people pleaser. There are no fonder memories of mine of Sophie than the way she embraced visitors to the shop. Her position on the patio was more welcoming than any advertising we could have paid for and I have seen countless groups of princess-dressed little girls to bleached-haired teenage boys to snap-shirted tourists absolutely suffocate her with love and attention. She met people on the sidewalk, often sniffing in their paper ba by @gncycleski

When we purchased the shop in 2016 I was 23, Willie was 25. It felt like a massive commitment.

I remember shrugging, telling one another,

“Its ok. If we decide we don’t like it in 10 years we’ll be in our mid 30s. We can always just do something else!”

And here we are.

Today marks 10 years of our ownership of GNCS.

It was the simplest choice to dive in and has been the easiest commitment to follow through on. Not many 20 somethings get to pour their heart and soul into a project they believe in and feel it succeed. We recognize the freedoms the shop has given us. The freedom to play on equipment we love, the freedom to live in a town that supports us and our interests, the freedom to surround ourselves with staff that become family, the freedom to pursue passions adjacent to the shop. It’s allowed us to work side by side and to build something powerful together - and that might be the greatest gift of all.

Year 10, mid 30s, and we’re not going anywhere. We’re still just a couple of kids showing up for their dream job.

Thanks for showing up for us.

This is Noah. He came into the shop last year asking about group rides. We talked a little about worlds, the ladies ride… and he wanted to know cool, but when is the chill ride? I said we would LOVE to support one, but we’ve never had a dedicated ride leader.

Here we are a year later and Noah is ready to kick off our new Saturday Family Friendly Ride.

Meet time: Saturdays at 9:30
Location: shop
Distance: 17 miles
Pace: mellow
Route: in bio under “short haskill loop”

A note from Noah:

Family and beginner friendly gravel ride starting at 9:30 at GNCS Saturday May 30th. The ride is 17 miles and has a great mix of pavement, gravel, flats and climbing. This is a very fun ride. We make space for kids and have no problem riding slower and adjusting to our children’s needs. This is great for families and beginners! Bring your bike trailers and seats and meet us at Great Northern Cycle and Ski at 9:30 Saturday, May 30th!

If the weather is downright terrible we will be happy to accommodate a coffee/hot coco hang out instead. 😎 taken in Great Northern Cycle & Ski by @gncycleski

Are we there? Is this the beginning of “go time” in this little town?

Historically, yes. Memorial weekend kicks it all off and we jam from now until sometime around Labor Day.

Sophie (and the crew) are ready for it. Open doors, ideally decent weather, all the daylight, and lots of people on bikes. We love it.

Current conditions within these brick walls:

🔧We are about one week or less out on bike service appointments

🎿 We will take in ski work only until the end of the month

🚴🏽‍♀️ The bike fit schedule has lots of availability through June

👗 The shop is chock full of good looking things to wear while riding your bike. About 1/3 of our logo merchandise is in store. More to come!

🚴‍♂️ Wednesday Worlds is alive and well, complete with a B group

🚴🏽‍♀️ The Women’s Weekly Gravel Ride is up and running on Tuesdays at 6pm

🚴🏼 NEW Saturday Family Ride to begin next week. More info to come.

🦶Yes! We make cycling specific footbeds!

To celebrate Memorial Day we will be closed Monday 5/25. Come see us for all of the above and more Tuesday 😎 taken in Great Northern Cycle & Ski by @gncycleski
