A delightful day with the Bay Area Health Officers at Hakone Japanese Gardens for our annual Regional Development Day. Thank you to the Health Officers Association of California (HOAC) for a good day of learning, rejuvenation and collegiality. by @gnewel

A Day of the Dead gathering of friends to remember our loved ones who have gone beyond. Everyone contributed to the altar. Kelli cooked up a big pot of green pozole with tomatillos from her garden. I crafted the charcuterie board and baked goodies. Healing for our hearts. by @gnewel

Halloween Pasatiempo walk with Janet and Betsy and Ruby. Trick or treat fun for all ages! by @gnewel

The annual Santa Cruz Witches Walk with my beloved colleague, fellow witchy woman and birthday girl Jen Herrera. Several hundred witches of all genders and ages gathered at Lighthouse Point for a sunset walk to Natural Bridges. A fun way to celebrate Halloween Eve! by @gnewel

Public Health Heroes! I spent this past week with beloved public health colleagues at the annual meetings of the California Conference of Local Health Officers (CCLHO) and the Health Officers Association of California (HOAC). We gathered in Butte County to learn more about the role of the Health Officer in disaster response and recovery, including a visit to the site of the Camp Fire in Paradise, where 85 lives were lost in 2018. It was sobering and impactful.

More photos from Las Vegas, The Gala! All to benefit the Diversity Center, providing critical services to our local LGBTQ+ community. Thanks for a fun evening for a great cause, @diversitycentersc by @gnewel

Last weekend in Santa Cruz County was a feast for the senses, with the annual Santa Cruz Film Festival and Open Studios just two of many offerings. I was honored to introduce two films with deep meaning for me, and to moderate the panel discussion of community heroes featured in the films. “Never the Last Love Letter” is a documentary about the Santa Cruz AIDS Project, one of the first in the nation, and was developed and produced by the Diversity Center. “Love is the Drug” was first brought to Santa Cruz by the Harm Reduction Coalition, and tells the beautiful story of early harm reduction efforts in our community. Big thanks to all who brought these stories to life! by @gnewel
