Turns out getting close enough to paint very small details while not blocking the camera with your head is a bit of a challenge. Who’d have thought?

Sketching a Stormcast.

Sometimes it’s great to just be a little rough. The jorn palette by @lead_wh1te is amazing for this with just two hues to select from. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the artistic takes on this palette. It seems to have tickled the fancy of a lot of us.

It has reminded me again how impressed I am with what @romanlappat.miniatureart can manage with a super limited time frame. I think there’s an important lesson in figuring out what broad strokes have the biggest impact. It’s something I could do with practicing some more.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this slightly more loose painting style.

Two hours, two colors.

Swipe to see what it looked like at the one hour mark as well as the colors used.

I wanted to have a go at the now famous jorn palette by @lead_wh1te but put my own spin on it.
I took the core idea of using a palette of only red and blue, but went with different paints.

Painting with a limited palette is something I greatly enjoy, it creates a very dynamic workflow. Working with only two colors was fun, though I expect if I’d had more surfaces I would start feeling too limited in my options. Something worth exploring I guess.

Painting larger scales always feels a little out of my comfort zone, but I do enjoy it. Another thing I should probably explore further…

Slopper

This charming master chef from the Necromunda Underhiver Hangers-on was painted as a bit of an exercise in focusing on the broader strokes and creating some fast definition without too much focus on refining.

In turned into somewhat of a struggle. Partly due to my inability to not get sucked into the small details and partly due to the staggering amount of small details there turned out to be on this dude.

I made a tiny modification to the face as it originally had a weird big tooth, which I carefully replaced with a piece of sanded down paper clip to work as a cigar stump.

Ork Boy

A little while ago I had the chance to get a 1:1 coaching session with @nrmpaint

We each painted an ork while Nikolas generously shared his process and approach to painting. There were some great take aways and I had a fantastic time painting with Nikolas and discussing who’s the best contemporary sci-fi director (it’s Villeneuve btw).

Once home I repainted almost everything on the figure to try and incorporate what I learned from Nik, while doing a bit of my own usual stuff as well. The result is this guy.

If you ever get the chance to learn from Nik, grab it. He’s delightful company, an incredibly skilled painter and great teacher.

Ork Boss Nob

Never thought much of this model until I saw the brilliant version by @masclans_miniatures and instantly got inspired.

I tried to push hard on the texture work, aiming for high readability and definition while creating a lot of noise on the individual surfaces.

I worked with a very limited palette to try and create strong sense of cohesion on the colors, which proved to sometimes make creating material distinction a challenge.

In the middle of painting this I saw @nrmpaint share his version of the (upper body of) the same sculpt and instantly felt I needed to go even further on especially the leathers.

I love getting inspired by the great artists in this community. Constantly pushing to get better.

Floating head.

Finally, months later, I got around to basing this piece I originally started for a Space Marine head challenge on @gitgud_painting.

Since the challenge was to paint only a head, I needed some way to present it. I went with these servo-skull cables from the Inquisitorial Agents kill team, and the result is this abomination.

The base is heavily inspired by the work of @coltaupainting who does the absolute best, lush, green scenes.

Allister Caine.

This little dude from @warmachinegame was a real challenge to paint. The detail level on these sculpts from @steamforgedgames is wild. Maybe verging on too much? 😅

I wanted to complete a quicker project after the last behemoth and am glad to say I actually succeeded this time. Some corners were cut, but for the time invested I’m happy with the outcome.

Now if I’ll never have to paint another rivet I’ll be happy.

Death World Veteran Agent

This stabby dude from the Inquisitorial Agents Kill Team is my first completed piece of 2026.

Two months in progress it’s been a real labor of love.

The intention was to try a quick paint job with some new approaches, but naturally I failed spectacularly at the former.

Heavily inspired by the style of @rodrigo.akore this turned into a fun study in NMM and somewhat smoother transitions than I’d usually opt for.

2025

Pretty much over.

Another great year in the wonderfully narrow hobby of miniature painting.

I visited more events, met more great people and painted more little figures. I couldn’t ask for better.

To every single person I’ve met these past twelve months at workshops, events and competitions: you all rock!

I’ve interacted with 100’s of likeminded people this past year and I’m constantly amazed at the positivity, enthusiasm, eagerness to share and curiosity to learn.

I could go on, but honestly, who reads this anyway?
