On Sunday, October 4th, the community of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Pittsburgh, PA welcomed Hierarchs from the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America for a pan-Orthodox Hierarchical concelebration of the Divine Liturgy.

Attended by more than 300 faithful from the Pittsburgh-area, the Divine Liturgy was presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Chairman of the Assembly of Bishops, along with the many Hierarchs and clergy (an extensive list can be found at the link in our bio.)

His Grace Bishop Irinej gave the homily which highlighted our calling to love one another as Christ loves us. His Grace said, “where love is present, God will also be there present. And most certainly where God is present, there too is love, for He is love.”

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Elpidophoros conveyed the Medal of St. Theodora, the highest recognition of the Assembly of Bishops, upon Anne van den Berg for her dedicated service to Orthodox Christian unity in the United States of America. Mark Arey, the other 2026 recipient, was unable to attend in-person.

On Saturday, October 3rd, the community of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Bridgeville, PA welcomed Hierarchs from the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America for the Service of Great Vespers. Attended by more than 150 faithful from the Pittsburgh-area, the Service of Great Vespers was presided over by His Grace Bishop Thomas of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America.

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, as Chairman of the Assembly, greeted the assembled clergy and faithful, stating that “the convening of our Assembly of Bishops is always a marvelous opportunity to experience the wondrous diversity of Orthodox Christianity in the United States.”

The assembled Hierarchs, clergy, and faithful were invited to the community hall for a light reception and fellowship hosted by the parish community.

At the conclusion of Great Vespers, the V. Rev. Fr. Jason DelVitto, Ph.D., Presiding Priest of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, welcomed the assembled Hierarchs to the parish and conveyed the fervent prayers of the clergy and faithful of Pittsburgh for a fruitful meeting of the Assembly. Bishop Thomas expressed his gratitude to Fr. Jason and the St. George community for their hospitality and noted that, “In my last visit a few days ago, someone asked me, if Bishops ever gather, and they asked me the same question I get asked all the time – about unity – I’m never worried about that because we gather together, worship together, go to the chalice together, as long as we do that, we are one Church – one Holy Catholic, Apostolic Church.”

📸 In photos: Earlier this week, 28 catechumens were received into the Orthodox Church this past Sunday through Holy Baptism and Chrismation at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Shrine Church in Flushing, New York.

The baptisms were the culmination of missionary work led by Fr. Samuel Davis and Archimandrite Chrysostom Onyekakeyah, directors of the Apostolic Mission to the African Diaspora in the Americas, West Indies, and Caribbean. Their ministry has focused on bringing the Orthodox faith to diverse communities, particularly members of the African Diaspora across the Americas, the West Indies, and the Caribbean, as well as African immigrants.

Today we commemorate Saint Romanos the Melodist, the great poet of the Kontakia. His feast day, October 1st, holds special meaning for all church musicians. In connection with his feast, we also observe National Church Music Sunday, typically on the Sunday on or following October 1st. The National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians offers resources to help parishes honor their choirs, youth choirs and chanters and celebrate the vital role of music in worship. To access those resources, visit: https://churchmusic.goarch.org/events/churchmusicsunday/
Through the intercessions of Saint Romanos, may God bless all who offer their musical gifts in service to His Church! #nationalforum #goarch #churchmusicsunday taken in Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America by @goarch

👋 JUST SAY "HI!"

October is Disability Awareness Month, and we're kicking off the GOARCH**"Just Say..." Campaign** with a simple invitation:

Just Say Hi.

A warm greeting can open the door to connection, friendship, and belonging.

This week's infographic reminds us to:
✨ Speak kindly and directly to each person
✨ Respect personal space and mobility devices
✨ Provide helpful verbal context when needed
✨ Use visual communication tools when helpful

Creating an inclusive Church doesn't start with grand gestures. Often, it starts with a simple "hello."

Follow along throughout October as we explore:

➡️ Just Say "Disability"
➡️ Just Say "Yes" to a Request
➡️ Just Say "You're Invited"

Together, let's build parish communities where everyone feels they belong; where everyone knows they are home.
