💕Puppy update featuring Emmy Jane from Sierra x Raider!

“Emmy is such a dream dog — super sweet, attentive, confident, and her enthusiasm and speed for which she learns has made training her to be my second Service Dog a dream come true. She came home at 8 weeks with good manners and a schedule and she has taught me more about how to be a good owner trainer by resonating to positive reinforcement training which is an extension of the positive foundation she received at the Gochee Farm. I wasn’t sure how to choose a puppy as my next Service Dog, but Meghan especially listened to me and answered so many questions I had and then guided me toward the puppies she thought would make good candidates for me. I chose Emmy, and she is exactly the temperament, size, build, and quality of mind and heart I needed. And she loves her job as my Service Dog! Last November, she had her first trip through busy airports, restaurants, and even my dad’s 90th birthday party — and she handled these new moments calmly with poise, curiosity, and love — all the while giving me the balance support I need to navigate the world with ease. I got so many compliments on her behavior from family, friends, and even strangers. I love her to pieces ♥️ and I am so grateful for the Gochee’s program which brought her to me.”

👃 Forest’s Litter: Our Neonatal period will include Early Scent Introduction. It’s introducing us to a variety of pungent scent items, as well as items we may interact with in our daily life. This exercise means we have the potential to be more alert companion, service, detection, hunting and therapy dogs.

Why are scent abilities important? For this particular litter, one puppy will be training as an SAR dog and a few others will be hunting & sport dogs!

⚠️ ESI is not training, it’s priming their olfactory sensors to prepare them for scent training when they are older. The blood vessels in a dog’s nose are so elaborate. Their sense of smell is one of their most important tools for interpreting the world around them, so it’s no surprise that much of their brain is dedicated to their olfactory system.

Here are some fascinating facts about a dog’s nos:
🐾Dogs have up to 300 million olfactory receptors, compared to our 6 million.

🐾A dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times as acute that of humans.

🐾A dog’s olfactory bulb is approximately 40 times larger in dogs than in humans, relative to total brain size.

🐾Dogs can use their nostrils independently.

🐾They have a whole olfactory organ of their own, the Jacobson’s organ, specifically designed to pick up pheromones.

🐾Thanks to the Jacobsen’s organ, dogs can also smell through their mouths, unlike humans. We only have the sense of taste and touch through our mouth, but dogs have taste, touch, and SMELL in their mouths!

🐾Our brains are dominated by a large visual cortex while theirs are dominated by the olfactory cortex.

⚠️ These are reasons why its so important to ALLOW US TO NOODLE AND SNIFF when out for a walk.

We have picked a stud for Ridge’s all black litter planned for this winter! Assuming all goes as planned, Ridge MH will be bred to GRHRCH CHSD Ranger on her next heat!

We are changing our deposit process going forward. Instead of waiting for to take deposits when a breeding takes place, we will be accepting deposits for up to four males & four females for planned breedings to hold a spot on the waitlist.

Changes are taking place under our eyelids to prepare for the gradual opening process next week. We were born with strong forelegs, so we can pull ourselves toward mom when we are lonely, cold, or hungry. We are blind, toothless, deaf, and we can’t regulate our own body temperature.. but that’s all about to change.
