Once upon a time—back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, when real club culture ruled the night—there was a place where girls came not just to shop, but to choose their weapon: the heel.More than fashion, these shoes carried confidence, attitude, fantasy, and freedom. And at the center of it all was one man: Mr. Albakro.Arriving from Syria in the ’90s, he opened a small shoe store in Athens in 1999 and became one of the first to introduce platform pole heels to the city. His first 100 pairs sold out—and soon, custom orders followed. Higher platforms. More shine. More drama. Shoes made for movement, performance, and becoming.As nightlife changed, Mr. Albakro never stopped. To this day, he still handmakes every pair himself.This is more than fashion. More than nostalgia. This is underground Athens—a legacy built through immigrant craftsmanship, iconic women, and generations of baddies who found confidence in impossible heels.Tonight, we honor the roots.
