Pietà Oil on linen, 36x48”Some of you may know this. Others not. Im not a fancy artist who went to art school. I’m a high school drop out but I later got my GED and I was a heroin addict for 19yrs. I stuck a needle on my arm running from who I was and my life. I never accomplished anything. My first overdose was at 19yo. When they found me in the morning I was blue cold and not breathing. I woke up in the ICU at Harbor UCLA in Torrence. I had caught pneumonia and was on a coma for a little over a month. I spent the next 10yrs chasing a high and had lost everything. In and out of rehabs and mental health. 3 more overdoses followed in that time. I should not be alive. At 31yo God found me and gave me a new life. I will have 10yrs clean this year. I had the opportunity to paint this mural this weekend. I met Pam a few weeks ago and she said I could paint whatever I wanted. So I described the image to her of my heaven on earth and she said yes. It was my image of heaven, a purple sunset, where pain (red) and sorrow (blue) run together to make a purple sunset on the beach, and spending that moment by the campfire with the ones I hold dearly. I didn’t know exactly what it would look like besides a few details. I started putting up bucket paint and pulled it all together with some cans of spray paint. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me. As I was painting It felt like I was fighting a war within myself. A struggle to see past all of life’s problems in hope of finding a new beginning and of better day ahead. I hope the passion and struggle in it portrayed something beautiful about this life we live. I myself have struggled with addiction, mental health, ptsd, adhd, and many other of life’s challenges including a broken home life and the years it’s taken to overcome and be restored. And I’m still a work in progress at 44 years old. Due to bad decisions and troubles with the law I’ve had to do a lot of inner work on myself, including therapy and working with a sponsor, learning to let my walls down and trust people again. This painting is about searching for peace but finding it in the little things, nature, beauty, time with our loved one’s. Which creates memories that ripple through time. Heaven on earth is my newest mural. I hope you get too see life and the beauty of simplicity as you take on your day. -Danny Crow Lopez Jr. by @godffiti
