I appreciate the positive news today from AITO - The Specialist Travel Association. It's a wonderful feeling to build on a professionally successful year and be shortlisted for one of the organisation's highly regarded Travel Writer of the Year Awards.

No success is achieved in isolation and thanks are due to everyone who responds to calls for information, quotable comments and photos. Many thanks to my commissioning editor and those close to me for support.

Travelling on Route 66 in Illinois provided a wealth of ideas and inspiration, and I'm hugely thankful for the wonderful experiences during a trip that presented opportunities to spend time with some lovely people.

It's really good to have attained shortlistings in the key industry awards during the course of 2026.

Best wishes to all of those shortlisted in the AITO Awards. Winners will be revealed in London on 5 October.

If you haven't yet visited the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, I recommend that you do.

The home of Manchester City Football Club operates guided tours, match days attract up to 61,000 fans and a new hotel recently opened at Medlock Square by the stadium.

The football ground is just one aspect of a world-class campus.

Wyld is now open at Freight Island in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is a live-fire restaurant and cocktail bar with live entertainment.

I was invited to the VIP opening party of Wyld on Thursday, 17 September 2026 and enjoyed sipping an Old Fashioned as well as a NE Iced Tea, which is made with Tácnbora whisky distilled in Northumberland.

It's an upbeat spot and ideal for date nights, post-match drinks and evenings out with friends. I enjoyed spending time at Wyld and Freight Island is well worth popping into when you are in Newcastle city centre.

Leaving was a pleasure too, thanks to the newly opened slide that provides an express way of reaching the ground floor. It appealed to my inner child: I used to love riding slides and helter shelters! I don't think I have enjoyed leaving a place in a long while...that's purely because it's nice to see a venue implement such a novel way to depart!

Cité du Cuir is in Saint-Julien, near Limoges in France. It offers a look into the heritage of french leather production.

The site provides an insightful and hands-on journey through the history of a trade that defined the region for generations.

Visitors can explore the processes behind tanning and glove-making. It's possible to see first-hand (no pun intended) how raw materials are transformed into luxury goods such as gloves.

Industrial architecture and contemporary exhibitions makes it a memorable destination for people interested in design, fashion and regional history.

The museum shop stocks products created by local artisans. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting.

I thoroughly enjoyed baked goods from Savour Bakery in Gateshead.

The item you can see here was delicious. Made with polenta, cheese and mushrooms, this style of croissant was a real treat. Served it at home with a side salad.

Also had a terrific wedge of carrot cake. Sadly, its visual appeal was of such high quality that it didn't survive long enough for a photograph to be taken. It was delightful with a cortado.

The bakery is in Bensham and has a pop-up in Fenwick's in Newcastle.

Kolios winery was one of the places that I visited in Cyprus earlier this year.

Marios Kolios explained that he began making wine aged 10.

Visiting the winery meant an opportunity to visit the cellar, view vines growing in the limestone soil of the Troodos Mountains and chat with Marios. There was also a wine tasting.

An epic live show with thousands of years of history, incredible special effects and a cast of more than 1,000 volunteers.

Would you add it to your list?

I headed there yesterday for the press preview and was impressed by the live show that conveys a history of England.

This year visitors can tuck into the Time Travellers' Feast before the show, Kynren - An Epic Tale of England.

Kynren Stories Lands also opened this year, with live entertainment including Vikings, birds and the legend of the Lambton Worm.

Really proud of this take on the Old Fashioned.

Firstly, I smoked two chunks of orange in my Ninja Wood fire. They're in the glass but behind the huge ice cube.

Then I mixed a generous measure of Sagamore cask strength rye whiskey with bitters from the same distillery. I visited while in Baltimore, Maryland, and treated myself following a tour.

Then I added a few drops of water and a spoonful of maple syrup.

I mixed and the result is truly tremendous. I think it's the best Old Fashioned that I have ever had (I have had some incredible ones!).

I was invited to participate in a stottie making course at Big River Bakery in the Shieldfield district of Newcastle. That was while attending the 2026 Media Getaway event, which took place in North East England from 15-17 June.

Stotties are a type of flat bread traditionally associated with the region and Shaun, who led the course, guided us through the process of making them. Step by step, we added ingredients then proved our dough. We then divided the dough and shaped it into three stotties. It was fun and, thanks to Shaun's expert guidance, felt surprisingly easy.

The resultant stotties are light and really tasty. I came home with the recipe and anticipate making them again.

Big River Bakery is a social enterprise. Participating in the course resulted in me finding out about some of the ways it's helping people. It made a positive impression.

Last year the Media Getaway event organised by Travel Connection Group was held in Chester. The 2026 edition is being held in North East England.

I am looking forward to participating and to hearing about tourism offerings from across North East England and beyond.

Visiting Chester was productive and this is a selection of my photos from visiting the city.

Here's to the 2026 event being insightful and enjoyable.
