DAY 7

Ventura to LA

HOME!

A year ago, I volunteered at the finish line festival for the 2022 ALC with my friend Steve when I decided to sign up for the 2023 Ride (and convinced Steve to join me). And here I am coming full circle and finishing the Ride with 545 miles on a bike over the last 7 days.

I almost didn’t make it over the finish line. I got a flat tire half way on the course which I was able to fix 💪but when I got back on the bike my gearing was a mess. Luckily, there was a bike tech at the nearby pit-stop and he was able to get me back on the road just before I would have been forced out due to time constraints. Whew.

It will take some time to process this experience, but for now I’m looking forward to walking places and traveling distances on four wheels.

ALC Day 6

Lompoc to Ventura

So much in one day — which can happen when you pedal 89 miles.

The day began with a climb out of Lompoc and then a famous descent through the Gaviota Pass where I hit my speed record of 44 mph. Um, did I just do that?
Got to chat with one of my fav Penn house representatives, Brian Sims.
Back to the coast as we work our way South. Rest Stop #4 was a dance party by the beach because, why not?
The day ended with a lovely candle light vigil.

Santa Maria to Lompoc

RED DRESS DAY!

Today was a mercifully short day and came with the added bonus of costuming. I have to say that the reputation of the “love bubble” is very true as people are quick to chat and laugh — or maybe I’ve just inherited my mother’s sociability. ;-)

DAY 3
King City to Paso Robles

RAIN

The day began with the notorious climb known as “Quad Busters” which lived up to its reputation in spades. Upon reaching the summit we were greeted with a downpour that continued for the next 4 hours. The sky cleared (finally) in time for lunch which was held at Bradley Elementary— a K through 8 school with 40 students. Each year, the school has a Burger cookout that is their only fundraiser. $17,000 this year will support field trips, art and music programs among other needs of this rural community. Amazing.
Grateful to have completed the ride today (many tapped out) and look forward to the half-way point tomorrow.
