SONIC SANCOCHO at Project Nowhere.

A DJ duo bringing Latin music on vinyl and serving sancocho at their parties. We sat down with them to talk about the concept, the music, and the culture behind it.

A little bit of sound, a little bit of soup, a whole lot of sabor.

Almost a year ago, this project began with a seed 🌱

Our Lulaworld team wanted to collaborate with the Afro-Colombian group Voces del Bullerengue — #AnónimasyResilientes and find a way to bring the stories and knowledge of bullerengue to Canada. From the beginning, we imagined this encounter alongside Lido Pimienta, whose artistic vision is deeply connected to the Colombian Caribbean and to many of the traditions and cultural histories that surround bullerengue.

We could have never imagined how beautifully the project would unfold.

On August 19 at Lula Lounge, that idea became a reality as we welcomed the maestras from María La Baja, Bolívar, and surrounding communities for the first concert of their first-ever Canadian tour.

For some of the artists, this journey also marked the first time they had ever left Colombia. What began as an opportunity to bring bullerengue to Canadian audiences became something much bigger: an experience of exchange, discovery and recognition that had an incredible impact not only on the audiences who encountered their music, but on the artists themselves.

And what a beautiful way to begin this journey — reunited on stage with Lido Pimienta, the most important contemporary voice of the Colombian Caribbean in Canada. The encounter brought together generations, experiences and artistic languages connected by a shared territory and cultural memory.

Voces del Bullerengue — Anónimas y Resilientes celebrates elder cantadoras whose voices carry decades of music, community knowledge and stories. This Canadian tour was an opportunity for those voices to travel, to be heard in new places, and to create new relationships without losing sight of the communities and traditions at the heart of the project.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who believed in this vision and helped us turn an idea into something more meaningful than we could have imagined.

Special thanks to Canada Council for the Arts, Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, Ontario Creates, Canadian Heritage. Lula Lounge and Latina Beer for supporting this journey.

And above all, gracias maestras. ❤️🇨🇴 taken in Lula Lounge by @gogojuana

This is the heart of VOLUME 18 of the INSTITUT experiment. Every week, a different hypothesis. Underground at 620 Spadina Ave — around the back, through the lot to the steel doors, down the stairs, past the mechanical room, through the swinging wood laminate door...

Come early for an open folk session with KRYVA KOSA at 5PM. Tara Moneka takes the stage at 7PM, followed by Juana Go-Go spinning vintage vinyl at 9PM. RSVP (PWYC) so we know who to expect.

Voces del Bullerengue # Anónimas y Resilientes
Canada tour parte 2 : El nudo 🪢

3 concerts & 3 workshops in 5 days. For some of these maestras, it was their very first international travel experience. Two of them are elders living with mobility challenges, yet I never heard a single complaint. They gave it all—and took it all in.

Greatful for these incredible humans and for the audiences that received them , their music and knowledge as they deserve 💫

Facilitated by the maestras of Voces del Bullerengue, this participatory workshop invites participants to experience bullerengue through the interconnected practices of song, percussion, and dance, while learning about its history and significance within the deep countryside of Colombia’s Afro-descendant Maroon Caribbean communities. Co presented by Lulaworld and Victoria Mata Productions.

Drums & Rhythms
Discover the rhythmic foundations of bullerengue and the roles of the tambor alegre, llamador, and voice. Participants will learn directly from the musicians through demonstration and collective playing.

Dance & Movement
Learn how bullerengue moves from rhythm into the body, learning some of the gestures, steps, and forms of expression that connect dancers, musicians, and singers.

We’ll close the workshop by bringing everything together in a rueda de bullerengue — a collective circle where song, drums, movement, and community meet.

🪘 Bring your instrument! Participants are encouraged to bring a llamador, alegre, djembe, maracones or other hand percussion and join in. No previous experience is required.

Tickets:

Tickets for this workshop are offered on a sliding scale and proceeds from the workshop will go directly to the maestras of Voces del Bullerengue.

For those who are able to contribute more, our higher ticket tiers include an additional donation toward earthquake relief efforts in Colombia. At this difficult moment for many communities, every contribution can make a difference.

If you are in a position to give a little extra, we deeply appreciate your generosity. By choosing a higher ticket tier, you are not only supporting the maestras and their work, but also contributing to relief efforts for communities affected by the earthquake.

Choose the ticket level that feels right for you — all participation and support is welcome.

$30 basic
$50 ($10 will go towards a Colombia earthquake relief)

💛💙❤️‍🩹Our hearts are with the people and communities in Colombia affected by the devastating earthquake.
At this moment, we feel an even deeper responsibility to celebrate and bring visibility to the artistic practices that protect Afro-Colombian cultural memory, oral traditions, and collective histories and to the artists and communities who continue to carry them forward.

💫Next Wednesday, August 19, we will gather to witness the opening performance of the first-ever Canadian tour of Voces del Bullerengue, a group of extraordinary maestras and cantadoras rooted in rural communities near Montes de María, including Evitar, María la Baja and Villa Gloria in Colombia’s northwest region. Through voice, percussion, call and response, storytelling, and dance, these women carry bullerengue, an Afro-Colombian musical and oral tradition led and preserved largely by generations of women, a living expression of cultural pride and resilience.

🌷We are also deeply honoured to have Lido Pimienta as a collaborator on this project. Drawing from her own connection to Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Lido has helped shape the artistic and visual vision of this Canadian residency. On Aug 19, she’ll join us in person and bless the dance floor with a special DJ set to close the night. ✨

In difficult times, gathering around music, culture, and community can also be a way of holding each other close.

We hope you’ll join us for this very special evening.
