voting with your dollar just got easier

Save this anti-corp food guide for later!

Steps I would take:
1️⃣ Read or skim this post
2️⃣ Develop your own personal rules for shopping
3️⃣ Determine your game plan with food buying moving forward
4️⃣ Divest from large corps + get to know small businesses
5️⃣ Enjoy better quality goods, warmer interactions, and lower costs!

I have found no downsides to shopping small, but it doesn’t mean it will always be easy.

We have to be willing to get a little uncomfortable.

To think back to the days before Amazon changed our consumer minds into thinking everything should be a one-stop shop, two-day shipping, and free returns.

Small businesses and local farmers need your support more than ever.

Tropical fruit & coral reefs pretty much sum up my childhood! 🪸🥭

Growing up with immigrant parents for me meant that things looked different than my American counterparts

Those differences made me want to blend in and unfortunately, it wasn’t until adulthood that I realized how beautiful it is to be different!

Now I’m making up for lost time by showing all the ways my parents’ (and extended family) upbringing & culture influenced my life

I love sharing our fruits with friends

I love teaching others about the ocean & coral reefs

I love looking back on the memories that have shaped me 💚

shark tagging with @field_school!!

I had the pleasure, no the HONOR, of joining UM’s RSMAS Field School and Miami Waterkeeper on the water last month for a full day of shark tagging!

we had the opportunity to assist the researchers with almost every part of the process from deploying the buoys to catch the shark, to measuring, and even cutting a “fin clip,” a piece of the sharks fin (where there’s no nerve endings) to be studied.

as you can tell from my bigggg smile I was STOKED all day.

my life was made when I got to clip the fin of a beautiful lemon shark.

that day, we caught 5 nurse sharks, 1 tiger shark, 1 bull shark, and 1 lemon shark!

it was an incredible experience thanks to @field_school, who is constantly taking people out for educational purposes.

major thank you and shoutout to @miamiwaterkeeper, I’m so grateful to have done their ambassador program and have the chance to participate in these incredible experiences, I’ll never forget this day!

you might not like this.

but I think we need to be more critical of environmental nonprofits and organizations.

I fear too many of us, myself included, have allowed environmental organizations to act as a proxy for what is right and true.

we expect sound environmental endorsements and for them to act as an authority on these issues, when these organizations themselves have troubling history.

regardless of the history, it’s important we don’t treat their opinion as shortcut for our own.

environmentalism is important to me, but not if that means at the expense of others or at the expense of those who don’t look like me.

all this to say, do your due diligence.
 even if it’s an organization you’ve admired or been part of your whole life, know their history, and use discernment.

for me, it’s not enough for the organization to care about the planet, they need to care about the people, too.

homemade + homegrown hot sauce 🤤

this has been one of my favorite projects thus far!

gardening, whether hydroponically or in soil, teaches you how much patience, as well as resources, is required to grow food.

we take for granted all the food available in grocery stores, the fruits and veggies available no matter if it’s currently season or not.

I personally eat seasonally to the best of my ability, as produce tastes better when it’s in season, has more nutrients, typically hasn’t traveled very far distances, and is more cost effective.

as we see more of strain on our food systems, I do believe we will have transform the way we eat to a system that is more localized, more seasonal, and more acquainted with the people actually growing the food.

meanwhile, I highly encourage everyone to get into gardening and even hydroponics, as it’s a great way to grow food that requires less resources.

in the midst of this heat and drought… I had to 🤷‍♀️

paving over Florida has cost us, and continues to cost us, so much.

not only are we displacing wildlife and destroying their habitats, but we’re creating inhospitable conditions for ourselves.

concrete and asphalt absorb heat really well, which creates what’s called the “heat island effect”.

that’s why whenever you’re in a parking lot in the summer, it feels like you’re on the surface of the sun.

according to the EPA, urban heat islands are, on average, 1 to 7°F warmer than outlying areas during the day, and about 2 to 5°F warmer at night. Increased population density, city size, and humidity can heighten the warming effect.

in contrast, areas with trees and natural flora can be up to 10 degrees cooler in the summer.

it’s also a matter of environmental justice as urban heat islands disproportionately impact Black, brown, and elderly folks.

overdevelopment is killing Florida and killing Floridians in the process, that’s just the truth.

we need to elect leaders who are concerned about preserving Florida’s nature and learning to live alongside it.

AI may have its place in the world, particularly with regard to science and medicine, but we simply cannot sustain so much casual, unregulated use of generative AI. The ramifications are not just potential, they are already in effect, and we believe it is our responsibility to reduce as usage as much as we can.

100% electric and solar-powered RV @pebblerv_

meet Pebble!

this RV comfortably sleeps four with hidden beds, maximizing space while still getting a full bathroom.

the entire roof is solar panels with a battery that can last up to 7 days (3-4 if running the AC constantly).

the touchpad makes it super easy to manage the different features like the shade on the skylights, as well as the automatic hitching feature! (I got to try maneuvering it on the touchpad)

I was invited by @pebblerv_ to see check out the RV for myself and I’m super impressed with not only the sustainability, but the features and comfortability. thank you for having me!

Protect Our Public and Tribal Lands!

Right now, historically protected areas are losing protections.

Removing these protections and giving their control back to the federal government, instead of the state of Utah, opening these areas of up to mining.

Coincidentally, there are uranium deposits under Bears Ears and coal under Grand Staircase Escalante.

Last time Trump was in office, he shrunk these same monuments, and mining companies were able to place claims on the land.

Protecting our public lands should be a bipartisan issue.

the next four weeks will largely determine whether Broward County is stuck with toxic air from another 40 years of trash incineration, and I’d like to bring you up to speed on what’s really happening with the plans for a Broward Solid Waste Authority.

I would like to invite you to an informative evening session on incineration and waste management in Broward County via Zoom with waste expert and environmental justice advocate Mike Ewall.

Mike will cover how incineration harms humans and the planet, the politics of what is playing out right now in Broward County, and how we can shift our current waste management systems to Zero Waste strategies to save money and protect clean air.

additionally, Mike will cover the current Broward Solid Waste Authority, its Master Plan (which still focuses on more incineration), and how burning trash conflicts with Zero Waste goals.
