Archiving the block so it’s never forgotten.

As someone from East London, this was a rare opportunity because I got to use industrial-level 3D scanning equipment to capture it in detail.

I’d love the chance to document more estates like this. It feels like an important way to engage with loss.

I’ve watched so many buildings disappear. Maybe this kind of work lets us respond to that change differently, imagining new possibilities and giving conversations around gentrification a more nuanced perspective.

Spiritual gentrification is real.

It’s the cathedral coffee shop. The Hail Mary mocha. The church that starts feeling like a co-working space. I get it though: churches sit on valuable land. And in cities like London, survival often looks like “development”. But I’m interested in what changes next:

What happens to a sacred space when it’s redesigned for customers?

Would you still go to church if it came with a loyalty card?

London didn’t always have the luxury of modern sewage, and the city once paid the price for it.

This stone bench, part sculpture and part architecture, was uncovered during a recent sewage upgrade. It is a small but powerful reminder of how London has constantly rebuilt itself to survive. Long before clean systems were in place, waste flowed through the streets and the Thames, shaping how people lived, worked, and even sat, literally.

Using 3D modelling, I’ve brought this object back to life by reconstructing its original context and showing how it once existed within a very different London. It is more than just a bench. It is a fragment of a harsher, smellier, and more chaotic city.

History isn’t just something we read. It is something we can rebuild, reimagine, and experience again.

As a sculptor, I had to make a decision.
How do you carve a memorial for people history chose to forget?

The Lashkars were South Asian sailors from India, Bengal, Malaya, Syria, and beyond who were never fully respected in the West. Even the word “lashkars” comes from Persian and Urdu roots.

So I turned to calligraphy, carving لشكر into stone.
A way to honour and reignite the story of these forgotten seafarers.

Did I make the right decision? 😱

I walked away from everything stable to pursue sculpture.

So I went straight to the source.

This quarry is where it all begins. Stone has been shaping the world for centuries, and somehow, I’d never even seen where it comes from.

Neither had the two friends I brought with me. Free of charge of course.

Standing there, it all clicked. What we create actually matters. One step at a time, I’m learning to trust in my audience to engage with my work slowly.

Funding my sculptural practice has not been easy. I have been lucky enough to have secured funding over the last few years.

Some of the key takeaways I wish I knew at the beginning.

Thinking collaboratively will help you bridge gaps. You’ll be able to move mountains when working together. Funders love reading about community catalysts. Plus their investment have a higher chance of success with more names involved.

Continue developing your projects. Even if they get rejected. Some funders love a coming-of-age story. Sometimes your time doesn’t align with their time, but it doesn’t mean there won’t be ‘a time’. Stay patient, and keep working on your craft.

Gather evidence. If you can show it. You’ve won half the battle.

Get some rest. Choose yourself over the funding. Remember to heal and rejuvenate. Trying to take breaks between applications.
