@izel.ersoy asked me why I am actually doing this, the podcast, startups and everything

I have never said this part out loud to many people.

I hit a point where I hated everything in the world and myself. Not like one broken thing but every single thing. So starting with myself, I reinvented myself and now I want to reimagine a better world for me.

Everyone is optimizing for the next quarter, the next election, the next thing they can point at. Changing that is hard. It is still the goal.

That is the real reason Useful Ventures is a studio and not a company. Every venture inside it is one piece of a world I would rather live in.

I would rather spend my life building that than complaining about this one. The world can be better. You just have to design it.

Suburbs gave us places to live, work and shop. They forgot places to just be

Alvin Tedjo says suburbs like Mississauga were built to separate life into boxes. Home is one trip, work is another, eating out is a third. What is missing are third places, somewhere that is neither home nor work where you run into people. At his events, he sees how hungry people are for exactly that.

A city can be full of people and still be a place where nobody meets. Community rarely comes from more programming. It comes from spaces where interaction happens without needing an invitation.

Think of the last stranger who became a friend. Where were you standing when it happened?

Trust is just promises kept, over and over

Max Medyk's definition is simple: you say something, you do it, and you keep doing it. He has helped thousands of people, made predictions that came true, and admitted it when some did not.

Think of the person you would hand your keys, your secrets or your savings to. You did not decide that in a day. They earned it through a hundred small moments of doing what they said and owning it when they did not. Trust is the one currency you cannot buy, only earn.

Think of the one person whose word you stopped double checking. What was the moment you knew?

A bus is a sensor that nobody is using.

Tammy Hwang is Hamilton's Ward 4 councillor, and she looks for more value inside assets the city already owns.

When Tammy looks at a bus, she sees more than transportation. It drives across the same roads every day, so could it help detect potholes or monitor road conditions? It has always been a moving billboard, so could it generate more advertising revenue? Could its movement also help the city understand density and how people move through different areas?

The bus still has its main job: moving people from A to B so they can work, participate in the economy, and live their lives.

But before asking taxpayers to fund something new, it is worth asking whether the city is getting everything it can from what it already owns.

What public asset in your city is quietly doing less than it could?

If you can get a warehouse approved, you can get a data centre approved.

Alvin Tedjo has served four years in elected office and supports taking time to create specific rules around new data centres.

His concern is that data centres can currently fit into existing warehouse approvals. Without specific rules, promises from an operator are not the same thing as enforceable requirements.

That matters because data centres can affect electricity, water, the environment, and the neighbourhoods around them.

The debate is not simply whether cities should have data centres. It is whether the rules should understand what is actually being built before the approval happens.

When technology moves faster than zoning, who should be responsible for catching the rules up?

A very small group makes decisions for a very large country.

Ryan Meunier is a retired teacher running for mayor of Guelph, and he thinks a lot about how much power sits in relatively few hands.

Ryan points to the number of elected public officials compared with the millions of Canadians they represent. His argument is that a relatively small group of people hold enormous decision making power, while the public often acts as though its role ends once the election is over.

It does not.

Voting matters, but so does what happens between elections. Asking questions, showing up, writing representatives, challenging decisions, and staying involved are part of democracy too.

Government represents the public, but that relationship works differently when the public stays engaged.

How much responsibility for a healthy democracy belongs to politicians, and how much belongs to the rest of us?

We spend trillions on education and still struggle to measure the return.

David Chidi Emmanuel is an entrepreneur and industrial designer building Abacus, a classroom feedback system.

He points out that enormous amounts of money go into education every year, yet the thing that investment is supposed to produce is difficult to measure. You cannot treat education like a business and look at profit. The return is actual learning and development.

That gap is what led him to ask a different question: how do we design classrooms around understanding whether students are actually learning?

We can measure attendance, grades, and test scores, but the thing we really care about is happening inside a student's head.

If learning is the real return on education, are we measuring the right things?

He had not graduated high school when he asked to help build a satellite.

Matthew Olver was about to start engineering when he saw an opportunity online in May 2020.

It was a chance to work on a CubeSat connected to the Canadian Space Agency alongside industry experts. Matthew reached out even though he had not graduated high school yet.

They said yes.

He spent about three years working with the team, and the satellite eventually made it to space.

The satellite is not even the most important part of the story. It is how quickly a completely different path can begin because someone saw an opportunity and asked to be part of it.

A lot of things probably look inaccessible simply because nobody has told us we are allowed to ask.

What would you apply for if rejection was the only thing you had to lose?

Property taxes were built for roads, water, and parks.

Tammy Hwang is Hamilton's Ward 4 councillor, and she talks openly about what municipal budgets should and should not be expected to cover.

In this clip, she raises a much bigger issue: how does a 12 or 13 year old end up with a gun? Her point is not that cities should ignore problems like youth crime. It is that property taxes were never designed to carry every complex social problem municipalities are now expected to manage.

Residents still expect the road fixed, the water running, and the park maintained while councils are being asked to respond to issues that stretch far beyond those basic services.

How much can we reasonably expect property taxes alone to pay for?

You basically have to marry your cofounder. The problem still has to be real.

Keegan Francis is a cofounder of Food Web, an Airbnb for kitchens.

When he was deciding whether to join, his first question was whether he actually liked his cofounder, Justin. His second was whether the problem had already been validated. Justin had done a ton of boots on the ground research, and Keegan started doing the same.

He went to farmers markets and asked vendors where they rented their kitchens. Everyone had an answer, almost everyone called it a pain, and many had spent hours cold calling churches looking for space.

That is when the Airbnb for kitchens idea stopped sounding hypothetical.

A good cofounder matters. A real problem matters more.

Before you build something, how many people have actually told you they need it?

A family trip to a Jays game showed him where transit pricing breaks.

Alvin Tedjo has served four years in elected office, and one policy he pushed was free transit for kids.

It started with his own family. When he was first elected, his kids were eight, ten, and twelve, and they took the bus and GO train downtown for a Jays game. The kids rode GO free because they were twelve and under, but MiWay still charged them, and then charged them again on the way back. Alvin worked out that the city had added about $24 to the trip and started wondering whether driving downtown and paying $30 for parking would have been easier.

For him, the issue was simple. Transit should not cost a family more than driving if the goal is to encourage people to use it.

Should taking transit with your family ever be more expensive than driving?

One conversation can say more about the economy than a hundred reports.

Mike Lewski is the founder and CEO of Bluebelt, a platform built for blue collar work.

He got talking with an Uber driver who came to Canada as a skilled worker and also works as a service technician for a major telecom company. The driver used the word "downfall" and told Mike that people are giving up. Cost of living keeps rising while salaries are not. When Mike asked what gives him hope, the answer was nothing. The driver also told him that many of the people he takes to the airport talk about being discouraged by their employment situation.

It is one person's view, but economic problems eventually stop being numbers and start showing up in how people talk about their lives.

If people are working and still feel like they are falling behind, what is the system supposed to be rewarding?
