That green covering isn’t the shell.

Macadamias grow inside an outer husk. Beneath it is a hard shell, with the edible kernel tucked inside.

After mature nuts fall and are collected, the husks are removed and the nuts are dried. Some are sold in the shell; others are cracked to reveal the macadamia you recognize.

California macadamias have a story worth preserving.

I recently had the opportunity to write about that history for the September issue of Pacific Nut Producer Magazine.

The article, “Stewardship in the Orchard: The Story of California’s Historic Macadamias,” explores some of the cultivars that helped shape California’s macadamia industry—including Beaumont and Cate—and why preserving that agricultural diversity still matters today. It also shares a little about how we approach stewardship at Gold Crown Farms, where macadamias are part of a broader agricultural landscape that includes Christmas trees, citrus, heritage fruit trees, honeybees, native oaks, wildlife and pollinator habitat.

California’s macadamia industry may be small, but its roots run surprisingly deep. We’re fortunate to be one small part of carrying that story forward.

A great day at the California Christmas Tree Growers Association Conference at Castro Valley Christmas Tree Farm near San Ramon.

There’s always something valuable about getting out into another grower’s fields, seeing how they manage their trees firsthand, and exchanging ideas with people who understand the challenges of growing Christmas trees in California.

From pruning and shaping to pest management and overall tree quality, these field days are a good reminder that some of the best information comes directly from other growers.

Proud to be part of California agriculture and this community of Christmas tree farmers.
