POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

With all the excitement about the re-release of Sasha and John Digweed’s seminal Northern Exposure mix CD, I thought I’d go back through the shelves and dig out some of Sasha’s early works from before this mix CD. Many of these were anthems of his time as resident at Renaissance in the early 90s.

I’ve tried to craft a mix that has enough variety in it, so that it’s not just a list of tracks. It aims to keep you interested! Some of these are B side, forgotten and rare mixes available only on limited press promos. Hope you enjoy!

Where possible, I tend to favour the long blends with plenty of tweaking along the way. I guess that comes from falling in love with electronic music as a nipper in the 90s where marathon tracks were commonplace. It’s not always an available option, particularly when you go earlier into Chicago and Acid, but when it is, it’s a joy.

The legend Derrick May on the remix here, wonderful panning percussion and groove. This release is a 2x12” with 6 mixes (incl Rollo and Sister Bliss of Faithless) in a variety of styles, all great in their own right.

Produced by little known guys - Todd Terry, Benji Candelario, Kenny Dope Gonzalez and Roger Sanchez. The Kenny Dope Mix is a chunky slab of 1994 house. Just enough vocal to remain understated.

Comes off as a negative image. Would usually take it off the deck but wanted to position for the camera.

Anyone wanting to try should practice with a record they don’t care too much about first!

Seen people do this and really make it a messy job when it doesn’t need to be!

Would recommend trying on an old, knackered record you don’t really care about first!!

Somehow I always seem to find a space for something from Sasha’s catalogue, which is vast. There are four remixes of his alone on this release. I chose two slightly less known versions, one as a continuation of the largely laid back theme of the mix, and the other as a big piano finale.

A bit more of a purposeful mix this time around. I’ve seen a lot of people say the art of the warm up is lost, so I’ve intentionally dug through the shelves to find a selection of cuts that would sit perfectly in a bar or warm up slot.

Anyone in the Gold Coast/Brisbane area looking for an option for those spots with a vinyl selector, get in touch 😉
