The Forgotten Category of Martial Virtue

For nearly 3000 years, a well-ordered household included martial virtue: the physical and tactical ability to protect those under your care. It was not separate from character or faithfulness. It was part of responsible headship.

Xenophon saw physical condition and martial competence as marks of a good household manager. The 1933 President’s Research Committee listed security alongside feeding, clothing, and caring for the sick as basic household duties.

We have quietly dropped this from the modern church’s vision of managing a household well. Yet elder qualifications demand it. The early churches would have assumed a man who managed his household well was physically capable of defending it.

Scripture shows the warrior-shepherd pattern: David protected his flocks from lions and bears before facing Goliath. Nehemiah rebuilt the wall with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other.

Spiritual leadership and physical readiness are not in tension. They belong together in the full picture of responsible care.

The church’s neglect of the body is not a minor oversight. It’s a theological failure with real consequences.

It traces back to Gnostic influences that treated the material world as irrelevant or evil and that heresy has never been fully exorcised from Christian thought. It shows up when pastors imply that caring about your health is vanity. It shows up in church cultures that quietly suggest a man who prioritizes sleep, nutrition, and training is somehow less spiritual than the guy burning out his body for “productivity.” It shows up every time someone misuses 1 Timothy 4:8 to dismiss physical fitness entirely.

But the Bible is not Gnostic. God created a physical world and called it good.

The Word became flesh.

The Holy Spirit descended on a physical body.

The resurrection isn’t an escape from the body, it’s its glorification.

Christianity is the most embodied religion in the world, yet we’ve somehow convinced ourselves that stewarding the body is suspect.

This has to stop. Not just because it produces soft men and unhealthy churches, but because it’s bad theology.

Lead strong for the men who take their faith and their responsibilities seriously, husbands, fathers, leaders, providers. Men who feel the growing gap between what their body can do and what their calling demands. Men who’ve never been given a strong theological reason why physical stewardship matters.

You don’t get to compartmentalize. The man who shows up in the pew on Sunday while systematically destroying his metabolic health the other six days is living a divided life.

It’s time to put the pieces back together.

Faith and fitness belong together.

Dominion Requires a Capable Body

Read Genesis 1:28 again. Subduing the earth is physical work. Exercising dominion over creatures is physical. Filling the earth through fruitful multiplication demands bodies healthy enough to conceive, carry, birth, and raise children.

Obesity directly harms fertility in both men and women. It disrupts hormones, lowers sperm quality, and throws off reproductive balance. The metabolic dysfunction affecting 94% of Americans is not just a personal issue. It is a fruitfulness problem. It is a dominion problem.
God tied physical health to His very first command.
Every age of dominion work requires capable bodies: farmers, builders, craftspeople, parents, caregivers, leaders. A functional, energetic, resilient body can do far more kingdom work than one depleted by neglect.
This does not exclude those with disabilities. They contribute profoundly. But unnecessary physical limitation, caused by choices we can change, reduces what we can offer. That is poor stewardship. by @goleadstrong

“Patriotism is as much a virtue as justice and is as necessary for the support of societies as natural affection is for the support of families. The Amor Patriae is both a moral and a religious duty.”

Men, your legs are the foundation of everything you do. Not just in the gym, in life.

The ability to squat down and stand back up without effort isn’t just a fitness flex. It’s a direct marker of how well you’ll move, live, and lead in the decades ahead. Leg strength is one of the strongest predictors of longevity and independence as you age. Lose it, and you lose your ability to get up off the floor, keep up with your kids or grandkids, and stay in the fight.

But strength alone isn’t enough. Mobility and balance have to go with it. You can be strong in a straight line and still fall apart the moment life throws you an uneven surface or an awkward angle. Real strength is functional. It shows up when you’re not thinking about it.

What you do right now, today, sets the tone for how you move at 50, 60, and 70. This isn’t about vanity. It’s about staying capable, staying present, and staying the man your family needs you to be.

Lead your family from the front. And be prepared to lead for the long haul.

“Your home is to be a little church, a little seminary in which you are to serve as an instructing prophet, teaching God’s precious truth to your wife and children” - Joel Beeke

Don’t let church be the only word of God your family hears.

Lead them to church.

Lead them to Faith.

Lead them throughout the week.

Masculinity is under full scale assault, brothers.
Low T everywhere… soy diets, endless screen time, endocrine disruptors turning grown men into soft boys.

Society screams “toxic masculinity” the second you lift heavy, protect your family, or speak with conviction. Porn floods the internet, hijacking dopamine and killing drive. Weakness is celebrated. Strength is “problematic.”

Yeah, I’m done with that nonsense.

Real men build. Lead. Provide. Protect. Train like warriors, think like kings, love like Christ. High T isn’t toxic, it’s the fuel for legacy.

The world doesn’t need more compliant nice guys. It needs dangerous, disciplined, purpose driven MEN.
Stop apologizing for your masculinity. Use it. Become undeniable. by @goleadstrong

“There are two great ends why Christ did institute a particular church, and they were to express the two great graces and duties that He requires of us. The first end was that his saints together might jointly profess their faith in Him and obedience to Him. […] The next great end was that we might have a direct exercise of His other great command and of that other great duty, of love to believers.”
